He sees people using watches to keep time for time-lapse movies.
He decides to make fun movies of the hands of his watch doing strange things.
He builds a spreadsheet to graph the location of the hands (on a y-axis) vs. seconds elapsed video.
He starts filming based on the spreadsheet predictions.
1) Spreadsheet not necessary; the only thing he couldn't do in his head was predictions of interactions of the second hand and minute hand. He's not pursuing those anyway.
2) Spreadsheet is limited in that it looks like a 5 second delay might appear the same way as a 25 second delay. I know it would look like a 55-second delay except that the minute and hour hands would move differently.
3) It would probably be better to do something with people. . .than with a watch and a camera and a computer.
