I like to read the birth announcements in the papers, mainly to see what strange names parents are coming up with these days. I've noticed that often in the Socorro paper the last name of the mother and the last name of the father are different. Obviously there is the simple answer of "well, they're not married". Most likely. But I have noticed that the vast majority are Hispanic names and I wonder if it has more to do with Spanish tradition of not having to change your name when you marry. I have noticed that New Mexico doesn't assume that you change your name when married. I had to call the State Taxation Department about a year and a half ago to get my name finally changed. My name on my social security card had change and I had been filing taxes with my married name for 3 or 4 years at that point and everything still came "Price".
Anyway this semi-rant is because of this delightful entry in the latest batch of Socorro birth announcements:
Dr. and Mr. Joanne Budzien, of Socorro, announce the birth of their son on August 6.
I looked up Dr. Joanne Budzien; she is a grad of Tech and worked on a paper with Julie, for those of you who know John and Julie.
