So Chris is working on his homework for his class "The Art and Science of Teaching". Today's discussion topic was on the positive and negative effects of NCLB. One of the negative effects was since teachers have to focus more on the tests, character programs are falling to the wayside. Chris stated that that wasn't a bad thing; now parents have to raise their kids instead of the schools. The instructor post back that the reason for the programs were that they were necessary; covered bullying, peer pressure, and drugs; and that the duty of the schools was to produce better citizens; and "Don't you think that is worth doing?"
Talk about your double-barrelled question!
We discussed this for a while as Chris was a bit scared to touch the keyboard. My concluding remark as he started composing was that if it were me, my response to the instructor's question would have been, "And if I say "yes", that would be submitting to peer pressure."
Proof again that I need to stay far away from the public school system. Unfortunately, Mara is in the school system.
