the train speaks

Sep 12, 2009 00:43

SF MUNI spoke to me tonight in bold, Sharpied letters scrawled on the bus seat before me:

THE REASONABLE MAN ADAPTS HIMSELF TO FIT THE WORLD
THE UNREASONABLE MAN ADAPTS THE WORLD TO FIT HIMSELF

THEREFORE, ALL PROGRESS DEPENDS UPON THE UNREASONABLE MAN.

It is clear that the Unreasonable Man wrote this message to flatter himself, otherwise it would have been stated that both the Reasonable and Unreasonable man were necessary to create balance and order in the world. Society requires both innovation and implementation [of plans, ideas, products] to develop and expand. Without one or the other, "progress" would be made impossible.

Meanwhile, the train whirred and moaned along its track in a a deep, electric murmur - its passengers sitting and speaking amongst themselves in various languages, seemingly unaware of this missed chance for enlightenment.
