"For all that has been, THANKS. For all that will be, YES."
Dag Hammarskjold
It was a good year. I can't make an adequate paragraph to describe how well it turned out for me, but let me share with you some of the things I learned, all of which I'm very thankful for, in 2009.
1) It doesn’t matter how it ends; what matters is that you will begin again.
2) Your happiness is your business.
3) If you're bound to come across the situation, there's no point in evading it.
4) Kill bad feelings with good looks, a smile, and a hearty laugh.
5) The people who rushed to the washroom and sat on the floor when you brokedown and cried are your real friends.
6) Those who couldn't be with you when you needed them but still made sure you were okay are your real friends, too.
7) What you need is not always what you want, but you'll like it eventually.
8) Your family should know.
9) Leading the life you want is always worth your time.
10) ...it shouldn't even be an option. It should be the norm.
11) If you didn't fight for it, you didn't want it enough.
12) If you fought for it but refused to honor it afterwards, you probably fought for the wrong reasons.
13) It can always be anything, everything, and nothing.
14) True self-giving comes from a well-defined self, not rudiments of it.
15) You didn’t waste your time if how you spent it made you happy.
16) An hour of having a good conversation with a boy you just met is possible.
17) ....whatever happens after that conversation--whether you end up dating or not--you'll still have a good reason not to give up on falling in love.
18) The entire population doesn't need to know unless it's a national issue.
19) You have the solution.
20) ...so trust yourself more.
21) Be careful what you believe in.
22) You don’t need condescending people in your life.
23) If it's costly, think thrice.
24) Don't easily believe in what people who don't believe in you say.
25) Too much pride is pitiable and laughable.
26) Too little pride can be stupid and dangerous.
27) Don't keep it if you don't want it.
28) Make an effort to look and be decent.
29) If it's good and it matters to you, keep it.
30) You're stronger than you think and you have more than you think you do.
31) Finding love is up to you.
32) Always make sure you're running after something worth your time and effort.
33) Today is a good day to begin.
34) You decide.
35) You’ll eventually get through it, so be patient.
36) It always boils down to how you perceive things.
37) It's time to stop blaming things outside of you.
38) When 'no' is the answer, don't say 'yes'.
39) If you didn't get what you wanted, just go on, get moving.
40) The heart, although merely the size of a fist, can find and hold an entire ocean of love. Let it.
"May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you’re wonderful, and don’t forget to make some art-write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can; and I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself."
Neil Gaiman
