On a quest

Nephrite is on a quest to regain his Shitennou powers again.

He's damned tired of feeling sorry for what he has become. If this place can offer a chance for him to get back what he has lost, then by all means he will do whatever it takes.

If Nephrite succeeds, then he will surely make people pay dearly for the shame he has endured.

...yes, that ( Read more... )

Oh, he can tell. Kunzite is very good at reading people and their motivations and desires. He tilts his head slightly, still arrogant, and asks somewhat smugly, "How about that? Would you like that?"

As if he needs to ask. He is holding those visions of success, acceptance, restored power, position, everything right in front of Nephrite's nose. The boy is probably all but salivating, metaphorically. For a moment, a twist of that easy casual callousness suggests pulling it all away, laughing in the boy's face and leaving him to his own troubles as Kunzite has done often enough before.

But this is different. Nephrite is proving more... reasonable. He is willing to forswear Beryl (finally). He has, to Kunzite's knowledge at least, no ridiculous loyalty to the Master, either. Besides, Kunzite has more or less given his word by now.

"Very well," he says aloud, as if coming to a decision. "We, the shitennou of this world, were able to increase our power by finding the part of our stones Beryl had hidden away. If you are able to do that, perhaps the power you had before would return. It's probably the best you can hope for." There's the slightest bit of contempt, rather than sympathy, in those last few words.

If the worlds are similar enough, anyway. It might be a wild goose chase, Mercury realizes. But it's not as if Nephrite has many choices. He must either take the risk, which may do him no good but which may solve his difficulty, or he must certainly stay as he is.

"If you don't do it," she remarks, "There's no chance of doing anything but sweeping floors for a very long time."

He bites the inside of his cheek to stop himself from answering the girl. As it is, Nephrite realizes that any attempt he does to make her shut up will more or less incur Kunzite's anger and/or amusement, and he doesn't want to lose the only hope he has got.

"Do you have any idea where the stones are?" he asks. He momentarily thinks about a possibility: had Kunzite found these stones, and had he taken his to increase his power?

Amusement, probably. But they'll stick to business, and Kunzite should probably be grateful that Nephrite is doing so for once, instead of giving in to his temper.

"For you, Canada," he says off-hand. Why, yes, they've gotten them, and Nephrite might want to consider the idea of a full shitennou with that additional power, and make appropriate adjustments in his tendency to constantly challenge Kunzite.

Nothing to add to that. Mercury shoots Nephrite a quiet smirk, full aware that he must be biting his tongue if he hasn't reacted to her sly comment, even if she doesn't know it's close to happening literally.

"Canada," he repeats, not knowing where that is. "How do I get there?" In fairness to him, he does not assume to include Kunzite and Mercury in his plans. He finds it lowering and annoying to assume, only to be later denied and mocked for it.

Probably no way, Kunzite reflects with unfair smugness and superiority. "You live in the human world now, Nephrite," he taunts. "Find out how a human would go."

Or, of course, there are probably portals here within the Dark Kingdom, but he won't be mentioning that... immediately. Possibly not at all.

"Maybe a plane," Mercury suggests, picking up the train of thought right away. Somehow the thought of Nephrite reacting to over-zealous flight attendants is amusing.

Cue Nephrite's internal freaking out.

"A... plane," he repeats. "That's a... that's a mugglehuman thing."

Nephrite's getting a lot of those are you stupid? looks today, and this is one of them. Hasn't Kunzite just said to travel like a human?

"Yes. It is." The tone is disinterested.

"Are you saying you're scared of flying?" Mercury adds slyly. Or maybe sweeping floors doesn't pay enough for a ticket, but that's hardly her worry.

"I'm not afraid of anything," he snarls.

As long as anything does not include anything human-related.

"Can't you just... teleport me or something? Using a plane seems very complicated, and hardly needed."

"Well, the Dark Kingdom needs to conserve its energy," he lies comfortably. "Jadeite would be furious." As if the reactions of the others have ever stopped Kunzite from anything he wants.

No, he thoroughly expects Nephrite to do his own work. If he accomplishes anything, it should be under his own efforts. As callous as he seems, the realization that Nephrite needs to feel his own success has not escaped him.

Not that Mercury isn't highly likely to bother Nephrite on his journey, if he tries it. There will be endless opportunities to goad and push and taunt him.

"Shouldn't you be hurrying?" she suggests.

FINE. He knows he will regret this later, but they would figure it out eventually.

"I don't know how to do... um, what to do with a plane." Seriously, he has NO IDEA.

How Kunzite manages to do so will probably forever escape him.

A glance away, which keeps his expression hidden and sends only his words back at the other two.

"Mercury. You enjoy the human world, hm? Do you wish to accompany him?"
