Thanks (my fiancee is less than thrilled that I have commendeered his computer, but he'll just have to survive)! I'm actually a speedreader (I read all of the Harry Potter books in under a week while working full time) and I've read.. um... a few hundred fan fics in the past few weeks. But, your's stand out in my mind, honestly, as the best I've read. I recommended Blood on the Moon to a coworker, in fact.
I will go back and come up with specific comments about the different stories, but as far as a gut reaction goes, it's what is similar about them rather than what's different that stands out... the sheer depth of humanity and emotion you give them. You delve into the grittier parts of them, fleshing out the characters as the scarred, flawed people they're meant to be. A lot of authors glaze over the insecurities and imperfections they have, but you use their flaws to make them realistic. That's rare and sooooo very appreciated.
Having *just* read Feral, specifically I would say that I like Remus' constant state of uneasyness about his relationship with Tonks and, at the same time, his rather nostalgic views of what they were (however much he'd rather not be thinking about it). It makes for a nice juxtoposition.
At the same time, I loved the more desperate, scorching need they had for each other in Blood on the Moon (and the plot was inspired, really). The added dynamic of Sirius' interference in Gooseberry makes for another different and lovely take on their relationship. And, again, the plot is just wonderful - suspenseful, funny, romantic... just terrific.
So that's kind of my quick feedback. I'm really looking forward to reading more of your work (particularly future chapters of Gooseberry and Feral) and will happily comment on them as I read them!
... I wish I could write as quickly as you're capable of reading and absorbing. Often when people speed read they miss the depth and details. Obviously you don't suffer from that limitation. ;) I'm very impressed.
Thanks for this response. As a writer it means a lot to get specific feedback about what you've done right or wrong, and to know what plot points, specific lines, characterizations, etc., that stick with people. If you do decide to go back and make specific comments, I'd love it if they were left as reviews on the stories themselves, if possible. It's great to have them in one place for reference and posterity.
I had read on your journal that you just recently read the Harry Potter books, and that now you're launching into HP fan fiction. If you've also just quit your job, you probably have some time on your hands to get thousands of stories read -- as long as your fiancé lets you near the computer. ;) I hope you're enjoying Checkmated. We work hard to make it a quality archive. :)
Thanks again for finding and friending me. Your comments on my stories have put a smile on my face this morning. As I mentioned in last night's journal post, I'm working on Chapter 5 of Feral now. Hopefully it can be posted soon. I look forward to hearing from you. Take care. ...
