100 Things 006: These boots were made for walking

When you're on a frugal budget, boots can be one of those things that make you turn pale and sink onto the nearest seat in horror. Well ok, maybe not that dramatic. But they are expensive and can eat a lot out of your budget, especially if you want to buy good quality. So without further ado, my tips for finding boots without breaking the bank.

• Sales! Never buy boots full price if you can help it. So many shops have sales year round now. Shopping the sales also extends the quality of boot you can buy for your budget. If you have a budget of £40 you could get mid range boots full price, or you might find a great quality £80 pair half price.
• Clearance stores. You might find a great pair of boots at a reasonable price because they're end of line.
• Ebay. I've just started using ebay and it's quite the treasure trove of quality nearly-new items just waiting for you.
• Imitations. Love DMs but can't afford them? It's often fairly easy to find sturdy imitations of brands at high street stores. Just use your common sense and a good eye; don't be afraid to examine the hell out of something before parting with your money.
• Second hand. Some people are funny about buying footwear second hand, and I get that. However, second hand shops do get donations of new or very barely worn boots, so it's well worth the time browsing them. I picked up a pair of boots for £8 that looked like they'd barely been worn, and the year before that I got a pair of embroidered Italian leather winter boots, still with all the labels on, for £10.
• Ask! Don't be shy to let people know you're on the lookout for a great pair of boots. You never know who might have a gorgeous pair that doesn't fit them.
