1 - Introduction

Jun 30, 2008 14:01

My name is Crow.

I'm aware that is something of a curt introduction, but it is the best I can currently offer. I have just... Woken up as it were. All I recall is a dream, a situation I am told is shared by all new arrivals to this strange place. I arrived--or woke, or was born, whatever the proper term may be--with a man named Flight. Due to the ( Read more... )

Greetings. And you may be?

Drake.

You have questions, I have answers. It's part of my job to answer stuff like that.

Drake. Your hand writing is very... Precise. Are you an organizer?

What is your job?

Of a sort.

Hatchery guard captain.

Captain Drake. I did not see you earlier, but I confess I do not see much--if you were there I would have missed it.

So you are here to answer the questions of the poor lost newly hatched?

Oblivious or blind? I'm not on shift at the moment. Otherwise you would've seen me.

More or less. I don't sugarcoat anything though, so you're not getting it with the pretties, the kittens, or the rainbows.

((OOC: The writing becomes a tad spikier, a little more quick looking--the hesitation blotches disappear. Crow is not carefully reviewing wording in his head before he writes. The strikeout is readable.))

The latter, actually.

And here I was hoping for rainbows. Well then Drake, give it to me without the sugar if you must. My current concern is eye wear. I have a pair of glasses given to me at my 'birth' but should I need to replace them I would like to know where I can. If the ones I have now were to be lost in some manner, it would be inconvenient.

Huh. Interesting.

If you got a pair when you hatched, then someone knew you were going to need them. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a tradesperson in the marketplace who can replace them, or if a pair would just turn up if you needed. This place produces the strangest things, so ruling out the latter option would be kind of dumb.

Actually quite dull. There's not much to see, when you can't see much.

That's good to know, if not exactly precise. I will make a note to see the vendors within the next few days--I would rather not rely on random events to provide for me.

What can you tell me about the scavenger's yard?

Valid.

Take someone with you if you're having that much of a hard time seeing. The marketplace is in the City Without Shape, which is a bunch of islands connected by rope bridges and you don't want to inadvertently be trying to swim across. Random happens...the strangest sort of random, really. Be prepared for it.

It's essentially a huge pile of junk. Every kind of junk, and it's all busted up. The scavengers dig up stuff from there, get it fixed, then sell it to make their money. Once in a while you might find something that triggers some kind of memory; that's what happened when I found my sword.

Your vindication of my statement fills me with happiness.

A simple impairment of vision does not make me an invalid. I don't require a guide to find a simple market, thank you. I appreciate your caution about the bridges, and I will be sure to be careful. Likewise I will prepare for the strangest sort of random.

The scavengers yard seems interesting enough to visit first. I hardly need to ask if you're a fighter--your position and mention of weaponry make that obvious. Are there any cautions I should be aware of pertaining to the scavenger's yard?

((OOC: The first three sentences are spiky and written in a larger, more abrupt script.))

I'm sure it does.

Invalid or no, there are some bridges you will definitely not want to cross without a partner. They're shaky at best and will dump you in the water at worst. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Yes, that was one of the first things I learned about myself. Combat comes naturally to me. As for cautions -- don't stick your hand on something sharp? Beyond that I don't think there's much to worry about.

((OOC: the writing has returned to it's original consistency--hesitations and all.))

Very well, I will take your warning to heart, Drake-san. There is no merit in losing one pair of glasses while attempting to find another.

Curious: Angel-san mentioned something about muscle memory. How did you discover your aptitude?

distant_dragon June 30 2008, 23:36:59 UTC
Obviously.

Having a sword in my hand felt 'right'. The rest of it -- what little I've discovered -- came from sparring or dealing with giant ants. When I was forced to learn something, I found out what I could do. I think it's that way with a lot of people.

moonlit_mirage June 30 2008, 23:51:50 UTC
Mm. Of course.

Interesting. I'll avoid--ah--giant ants if possible, in any case. I'm sure I will be able to find an occupation that doesn't require such extreme measures to reveal aptitude.

What about other means of memory recovery? Luna-san mentioned crystals, but she also mentioned a cost that accompanies them. What about meeting someone from your past life? Is that a common or likely thing to occur?
