Cast of Characters
Since Moonlight on Masks is developing such a large cast of OCs--and offering new takes on familiar characters--we thought we'd be helpful and offer up this list of characters. It will be updated with every new chapter release, at least as long as there are new characters in said chapter.
ANBU
Squad One:
Tsuchiya Ryuuhei (30) CAPTAIN & COMMANDER
- dark hair and eyes; a little serious; kind to his subordinates, but doesn't hand out compliments lightly. Ninjutsu specialist, using paper and ink techniques (he's also an extremely gifted artist).
Marui Atobe
- ninjutsu and medic; has served under Ryuuhei for nearly three years
Makoto Shibata
- taijutsu; has served under Ryuuhei for a little over two years
Kawakami Iwao
- genjutsu; has served under Ryuuhei for six months
Squad Two:
Tenzou (23) CAPTAIN
- calm, laid-back, dedicated to his work and his comrades; he's usually good-natured but can be very stern when he needs to. Exceptionally skilled shinobi who still likes to be lazy when he can get away with it.
Akimichi Touji (19) ROOKIE
- big and incredibly fast, also kind and protective; admires and looks out for Yuugao (he's had his time dealing with prejudice, too). Over seven feet tall.
Squad Three:
Sakamoto Genta (26) CAPTAIN
- cheerful, friendly, gets along well with Hayate and just about everyone else. Is "getting some action" with Mitsui Hidehiko. Joined ANBU at 21 and served six months under Mito Izumi before her retirement; then served in Squad Seven for another year before being promoted to captain himself. Pale blond hair, light blue eyes, near-constant smile; slender, short (5'5"), genjutsu user.
Aoki Kazuhiro (24)
- likewise good-natured and friendly; he'll put up with just about anything short of an insult to his captain, whom he half-worships. Good friends with Ryouma, and came into Squad Three as a rookie eleven months ago. Tall, reddish hair, handsome, with a goofy grin; taijutsu user.
Shimizu Masao (23)
- equally good-tempered, insatiably curious; he likes to know everything that's going on, and he's got his own pet theories about most of them; he's doing unofficial psych profiles for all the ANBU agents on the side, most of them rather tongue-in-cheek. Short, skinny, and weasel-faced, but he's double-jointed and can contort himself into amazing knots. Taijutsu user and team medic.
Yonda Daisuke (23) ROOKIE
- arrogant and chauvinistic, Daisuke's convinced that there's One Right Way and he knows it. On the other hand, he's loyal, brave, honest, and a talented ninja. Hero-worships Tousaki Ryouma--although recent events have left his hero a little tarnished but more badass than ever. Tall, brawny, dark-haired and good-looking. Ninjutsu specialist.

Squad Six:
Gekkou Hayate (21) - 011671 CAPTAIN
- kenjutsu, ninjutsu; Air and Water
- Only son of a well-known kenjutsu family. Confident as a ninja, slightly less so with girls; quiet, well-educated, reasonably organized, adventurous in his eating habits. Calm and steady, the visible rock of the team; he holds them together, and they know they can count on him. Took command six months ago, when Hatake Kakashi retired; before that he served under Kakashi's command for nearly eight months. For nearly a year and a half before that, he served under Ryuuhei in Squad One.

Tousaki Ryouma (22) - 010243
- all-rounder, focus on ninjutsu; Fire and Water
- rough and unpolished; he's a war orphan brought up by an alcoholic grandfather, and basically grew up on the streets. Tends to be protective of the others, whom he considers sheltered. Teases them like an older brother--even Hayate; he's pretty irreverent about authority. Adventurous, reckless, easily-provoked, a little hot-tempered, emotionally open; he's not at all reserved like the rest of the team is, and he's constantly persuading them to try new things (where he can both laugh at and keep an eye on them.) A little unsteady in tight spots; he needs someone stable to rely on. Has served with Hayate on Squad Six for almost a year; came in as a rookie. His ninjutsu tend to be viciously destructive in attacking the human body. Two of his worst are Naizou Youka no Jutsu, which liquefies his victims' innards, and Nikutai Hakai no Jutsu, which decomposes a living body in a matter of minutes.

Uzuki Yuugao (19) - 012161 ROOKIE
- taijutsu, minor ninjutsu; Air and Lightning
- intense, almost painfully earnest, and eager to please; she wants more than anything to prove herself, which occasionally conflicts with her desire to fit in. Reserved, and tries to conceal being rather emotionally unsteady; she has a quick hot temper, is easily discouraged or depressed, and is exceptionally insecure about anything that doesn't involve her skills as a ninja.
- 5'6", slender, compact build. Long dark purple hair, oval face, pointed chin, usually serious (but with an unexpectedly sweet smile), very pale skin.
Yamane Shou (19) - 012104
- field-medic and genjutsu; Water and Earth
- earnest, studious; more educated than is typical for ANBU; he originally intended to be a full medic. He gets along well with Hayate, and comes from a wealthy family; he went against their wishes in joining ANBU. Constantly teased by Ryouma, but will staunchly defend him (or any other member of the team). A little socially awkward, but enthusiastic enough to make up for it; people like him and want to cuddle and look after him. But he has a backbone of steel; he can keep his head in any situation, and when the crisis comes, he always comes through. Added to the squad from Squad Ten six months ago, when Hayate became captain; has been in ANBU for about nine months.

deceased: Itahama Fukashi (24), taijutsu specialist; boar mask. Ryouma's best friend and fellow prankster. KIA three months ago; served on Squad Six for eight months before that, and served on Squad Twelve for five months before that.
retired: Hatake Kakashi (previous CAPTAIN), ninjutsu specialist; dog mask; one of the ANBU legends. Retired six months ago to work as a regular jounin, though he's still occasionally called in to help out with missions that need a Sharingan eye or his exceptional skills.
Squad Eight:
Yamanaka Hiroshi (22) CAPTAIN
- tall, handsome, long blond hair, vain, nosy, enjoys poking fun at his comrades; the kind of guy who never lets a threadbare joke drop. Something of a chauvinist. Gets along fairly well with Hayate, despite all appearances.
Squad Nine:
Tanabe Satoru (24) CAPTAIN
- a little sheepish, quiet, takes missions to get away from his PMSing girlfriend
Squad Ten:
retired: Mito Izumi (previous CAPTAIN); served with Genta when he was a rookie; described as "scary as hell, batshit crazy, and really, really awesome". Retired four years ago to marry her genin teammate; she has two children now and teaches part-time at the Academy.
Torture & Interrogation
Morino Ibiki (25) CAPTAIN
- Tall, gaunt-faced, heavily scarred. Wears a sweeping leather coat and gloves, and has quite a sense of drama. Is highly feared as an interrogator, and openly called a sadist. Strong, commanding presence. Fiercely loyal to Konoha.
Intelligence
Mitsui "Hiko" Hidehiko (27)
- An Intel agent in the department of Codes and Cyphers. Quiet, nerdy, and bookish; loves doing sudoku and other puzzles. Currently sort-of dating Sakamoto Genta; they met when Hiko gave a talk to the captains about a new code system. Shoulder-length sandy brown hair, glasses, 5'9".
Medics:
Hideyoshi-sensei
- lectures the rookies on caring for their tattoos
Oda-sensei
- tall, burly medic who works out in the ANBU gym
Nanao-sensei
- short, gruff, older woman who's seen it all before. Is fond of Hayate.
Staff:
Quartermaster (Hideyoshi Masaru; not related to the medic)
- gruff barrel-chested man who takes immense pride in his ability to judge a candidate's character and provide a suitable mask. Not a man you want irritated at you. Likes polite agents, rather fond of Yuugao. He's been Quartermaster for eight years, since he was discharged from active duty with a bad knee.
Others
Kamizuki Izumo
- Yuugao's closest friend since the Academy, a chuunin assistant at the Hokage's Palace, and an outstanding cook. Best friends with Kotetsu.
Hagane Kotetsu
- one of Yuugao's closest friends since the Academy, although they're constantly bickering. He's also a chuunin assistant at the Hokage's Palace, and he's best friends with Izumo. He's a card shark, and seldom loses to anyone at poker (even Hayate).
Mitarashi Anko
- a special jounin who's been friends with Yuugao, Izumo, and Kotetsu for years. Enthusiastic--some say hyperactive--but entirely devoted to her friends and her village. Self-proclaimed president of the association of Devilishly Attractive Single Kunoichi.
ANBU
Squad One:
