So, for those of you who don't know, I used to be an avid Catholic. Well, no... but I used to hang out with other Catholics, often feeling like I shared their spirituality and faith while at the same time cringing at some of the beliefs they spoke about that made no sense to me, but that I knew were beliefs that all Catholics had to make. Like abstinence. And resistance from sexual (especially homosexual) temptations. While I still consider myself a spiritual person, I no longer affiliate myself with that particular church. because I didn't want to pretend any more that I was exactly like them.

Well, anyway. When I was in the Montreal Catholic Challenge group, I was put onto their listserv. I haven't been taken off it yet, though I might consider doing so soon. I no longer attend the events they hold, and a lot of their anti-gay marriage and anti-abortion emails make me very sad and/or angry. But then again - those emails are what remind me of why I'm different, and why my search for spiritual guidance will not be found among this group. So in a way I keep the emalls coming so as to keep connected with what's going on with the people, while also reminding myself of why I don't spend time with them any more.

This is an excerpt from one of the anti-abortion emails I got.

More than 3,500 babies are surgically aborted every day in America and thousands more by chemical abortions. We cannot remain silent. We must stand together and voice our opposition to this slaughter. We especially encourage young people, the survivors of the abortion holocaust to participate. Over one-third of our generation has been snuffed out, forever silenced by abortion.

Today's youth don't exactly embrace abstinence. Public high schools are force-feeding sex education and sexual immorality on unsuspecting young people. The major teachers union even endorses abortion. These temptations are difficult to resist, therefore resulting in thousands of teen pregnancies and teen abortions. Wearing pro-life shirts will spark discussion, will open eyes and will save babies from being aborted.

"Abortion holocaust"?! dude... what?

And how DARE public high schools force-feed sex education on them! and teach them about safe-sex practices! and what's this sexual immorality? are we talking about teaching the kids to be big fat HOMOS? i think we are.

argh! I don't have statistics - it's too early in the morning - but it just really bugs me at how fucking DIRE they make the situation seem. it's soo loaded with "We are incredible wonderful Catholics and everyone else is going to HELL" bullshit.

hi. it's early. i'm done.
