Life update

LJ, hello! I have been busy busy lately.

I was Chell from Portal for Halloween. (Thanks, hannelora24 for your immensely brilliant handiwork!)

This was a triumph.

I haven't been to NYC in a while since my sister left for Japan, so going back for the day was really therapeutic. Steven (www.sugarboukas.com) and I went together (we're inseparable!) and I had a really good time. My feet are killing me though; other than one taxi ride at the very beginning to Westville for some amazing brunch with his amazingly talented sister Rebecca and her boyfriend Ian, we took the Lower East Side by foot.

The only man who could put up with my embarrassingly bad sense of direction.

Stops included Forbidden Planet for our dose of comics. I've been really burying my nose in Hellboy and B.P.R.D. lately. Good American comics are really awesome stuff; totally digging it. Mignola and Guy Davis and Dave Stewart are absolute geniuses, and they've definitely been helping me shape the way I'm making my own comic, dell'osso. Next up to read are Invincible and The Goon! I ended up buying the first trade of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen too, because, y'know, that's good stuff. Oh, and some Alan Moore essays on writing comics... yeah yeah.

Police symbol covered up by none other than our beloved Dark Knight.

My SoHo stop wasn't so fulfilling this trip. Meaning, I didn't spend on clothing like I had planned (not that I really should), but we did really splurge on $6.50 shots of Mariebelle Aztec hot chocolate and a $45 16-piece box of chocolates for his parents, a gift I'll be bringing down to Maryland as a thank you for treating me to two dinners prior and for letting me invade their home for Thanksgiving. Sunrise Mart was next door, so we stopped in for some restocking of Asian food supply (translation: SNACKS, and lots of them; no Oronamin C, though, bummer).

The most charming street musicians I've ever heard!  Those four-part barber shop harmonies were marvelous.

Forgoing Baoguette in St. Marks, we instead impregnated our bellies with Shack Burgers from Shake Shack. Now, some people may say differently, but the Shack definitely packs some good freaking burgers. I like them better than Five Guys, something about it tastes cleaner. Then back to the West Side for our busride back (finished reading B.P.R.D. trades 4 and 5... SO FUCKING GOOD, but I will get into that in another entry).

Additionally, more photos from my life can be found at my Posterous: thievingmagpie.posterous.com

Anyway, I've been doing a lot of art lately so there will probably be a dump of sketches coming soon. For now, have Parvana, one of the characters in my comic. She is French-Indian and quite the diligent notetaker, and has sixpersimmons' nose. dell'osso is a horror/mystery story that takes place in France, 1915. I'm quite enjoying its creation process thanks to all this new material I've been absorbing!

Hope the lot of you are faring well! It's cough-your-lungs-out season, so stay healthy!

Much love,
♥ irene
