There's a lot of excuses in Charles Xavier's head as he lies in bed. He can't help hearing them because he's the strongest telepath in the world.
With the strongest mental shields, he hears.
The others in the house project too loudly for him to block it all out.
And again with the mental shields.
He needs to keep a link to them, to all of them, because too many things can happen in the split second he doesn't pay attention.
A link doesn't involve this, doesn't involve listening in the night, like an unknown voyeur.
But the truth is, he does it because he wants to. Because he wants to feel the connection his students have with each other. He wants the fire between Scott and Emma, the passion between Logan and Ororo, the need between Bobby and Jean Paul.
He wants the longing Kitty feels for Wisdom when she touches herself in the night, and the pang of shame when Kurt thinks about Logan as he spills himself into his hand.
He wants it all, because it makes him feel alive.
And in his mind, Erik just laughs.
