Dilemma:

For many years I have been anti-boy scouts because of their discrimination against gays and lesbians. I have also heard of them refusing to admit boys who are not Christian and/or boys who are uncomfortable saying their boy scouts oath. On particular troop in Kansas, I heard about refused to admit a boy who was deaf simply because he was no-oral. Before their ruling about gays/lesbians I thought about putting Josh in the cub-scouts and was told by the local leader that they could not legally refuse him but would rather I not let him join since they did not “know how to handle a disable child.” This was in the Tampa/Plant City area.

Well I haven’t thought about it much, but recently Josie joined the girl scouts; I have no problem with the girl scouts since they do not have any policies discriminating against anyone of alterative lifestyle or policies of having to say a Christian oath. But now that Josie is going to Girl Scouts Josh has said he wants to be a boy scout.

Josh doesn’t often ask to join a group, so I was a bit surprised and if they didn’t have a policy against gays and lesbian I wouldn’t mind him joining. But there’s the rub. I am very pro gays and lesbian rights and do not want to be associated with a group that wants to vilify and discriminate against a group of people. But then I think that Josh doesn’t ask for much…ugh! Also a friend of mine pointed out that if I wanted to see their policies enforcing discrimination gotten rid of that I could do more from the inside than the outside…

It almost makes me want to start my own children’s group. One for both boys and girls (cause frankly I never understood why the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts couldn’t combine to have the Kids Scouts…)
