I don't know if I've filled everyone in on my lovely neighbor downstairs.  Since we moved in, he has consistently complained of our "excessive walking," which supposedly wakes him up while he's trying to sleep. For most of August and September, he would let us know we were "walking too much" by throwing a ball against his ceiling, making a loud thump. This escalated to the point where, while I was writing a legal memo for the next day, he threw his ball at the ceiling seven times in about five minutes.

After a week of hearing nothing from him, we received a letter from the management informing us that there were complaints that we were causing loud noises and disturbances during quiet hours (10pm to 8am). I wrote back a very official letter documenting the times he had thrown his ball, explained that we were merely walking barefoot, that we avoid our bedroom except for when going to bed, that i wished i could go to bed at 10, but that's just not happening, and that he is being a nuisance and harassing us. Management told us they were on our side, as we should, after all, be able to walk in our apartment, and sent the letter on to him.

Again, there was a period of silence. As much as I enjoyed the lack of thumping, it was a feeling of eerie calm, of waiting for the other shoe to drop. And drop it has... A few nights ago we heard a sound, a different sound, more, i don't know, sharp. Kind of like a hammering sound. And then this morning, we were woken up by three loud bangs, coming from directly under our bed, at 6:30 am. (We were asleep, in bed, not even walking.) This continued until 8:30, when we left...three loud noises, every twenty minutes, practically like clockwork.

Lewis checked in with our building's manager...he had sent a letter on Saturday, claiming we had stomped around on purpose, waking him up, every night for the last week. (as tempting as it would be to tap dance or something, we have resisted. We are determined to not sink to his level, to take the more mature, less childish approach, than this grown man who is at least fifteen years our senior.)

I am NOT HAPPY. Especially since I have a final today...which, out of all my finals, will most likely be the easiest, however, since it's multiple choice, etc., being awake and alert is pretty important. But, apparently the manager will have a talk with our neighbor, and with the building's legal team, so, maybe, things will stop.

I'm a little scared to live above someone who is clearly unstable and angry...I'm not quite sure what comes after purposely waking up early to bang on the ceiling in twenty minute intervals just to make people suffer because you feel you've been wronged by their barefoot walking.

GRRRR.
