Meet The Parents.
I can feel us growing away / like an iceberg scraping the Earth / traveling further from what we had.

Life in Busan isn’t as bad as Changmin had expected. Though it is very different from living in a village in rural Chungcheong, it isn’t difficult to get used to - and even if it had been, Changmin had always been adaptive by nature. His fears of big bad bullies with their caps on backwards shoving him into the walls were disproved by the students in his class, who were mostly friendly. Other than the more rigorous workload that came with transferring to a more advanced school and that naturally came with being in middle school, Changmin can find no disadvantages.

His mother seems happier, bounces around the house with a grin on her face. She had always wanted to live in Busan. His father is busy with work, and when he is home, Changmin doesn’t see him - he coops himself up in the tiny office, presumably with work. JaeJoong is just as busy.

“Highschool sucks,” JaeJoong mutters one day after school, flopping onto Changmin’s bed miserably. “I want to drop out.”

Changmin rolls his eyes, “It’s only two years.”

But JaeJoong doesn’t think it’s worth it. “I don’t even understand what I’m learning - quantum something-with-needles. What am I gunna use that for, huh?” He mutters something in their rural dialect, propping his feet up on the wall.

That was something; Changmin and JaeJoong are still trying to rid themselves of their accents. JaeJoong is too used to his, but Changmin is desperate to be rid of his own. The kids at school tease him when it occasionally pops out - not maliciously, but the same feelings are there. JaeJoong almost refuses to speak ‘pure’ Korean at home, and is almost offended when Changmin does.

“It’s part of who we are!” he snaps.

“Maybe I don’t want to be who I was in Chungcheong,” Changmin admits - he doesn’t mean it at first, but the more he thinks of it, the more he realizes it’s true.

JaeJoong stares at him like he’s a stranger. “You don’t want to be Changmin?” he sounds hurt. My Changmin? he thinks. Changmin doesn’t say anything, goes back to his English homework. Cho Hye needs directions to New York Square. Using the map below, direct her to New York Square in simple English. JaeJoong stares at the tiny toy truck on Changmin’s desk, rubs at the corner of his stinging eyes, and leaves the room in a hurry.

“Go left,” Changmin mumbles to himself through his work, before he drops his pen and sighs.

JaeJoong doesn’t talk to his brother for a week, leaving the room in an emotional huff whenever Changmin comes near him. Changmin hates knowing that he’s said something wrong, because they’ve been together all his life and they’ve never argued - not like this. He expects, for the first few days, that JaeJoong will come to him and apologize. When the weekend ends and it’s Monday again, he realizes it isn’t going to happen.

One day, almost two weeks later, JaeJoong comes home with a new friend, introduces him their mother as Kim Junsu, the nice neighbourhood boy who is in JaeJoong’s Advanced Physics class. Changmin can’t do Advanced Physics yet.

And as Changmin watches the three of them joke in the kitchen from a crack in the doorway, rubbing his fingers numbly against the doorframe, he can’t help but feel he’s been replaced.
