Briony and I launched our Eurovision quiz at the office this morning, with a warning to people not to go looking the answers up on the Net. Her daughter had done a fine job making cakes, and her son a brilliant job doing the little flags of all 43 countries to stick in them. A few cakes sold (all proceeds to MIND) during the day, but by two in the afternoon she was walking the floor hawking them to people at their desks. I chipped in my loose change and bought a second, and Briony and I reflected with some sadness that no-one had handed any quizzes in. (Demelza had taken one look earlier and said "I don't know any of these.")
"Let's face it, you and I are the only Eurovision fans in the place," I said ruefully.
"It was quite a relief to find you," she replied. Then, to my colleagues, she added "When Wilhelmus sent me the quiz questions I got eighteen out of twenty. That's worrying."
Seeing me constantly adjusting my big beasts of earphones on my iPod, Demelza said "How can you listen on those? You have to get some in-ear headphones. Once you do you'll wonder how you ever listened on those things." She showed me some pairs with the soft buds that fit right into your ears like hers. So after work I strolled down to Argos to splash some of my birthday money on a pair - as luck would have it, the ones I picked turned out to be on special offer. I only found out when the counter girl charged me £2.99 instead of the £5.99 I expected. Trying them out now and Demelza was right - infinitely better.
Keeping 'em crossed for Kati tonight - and Anna, though in vain I fear...
