HDM = His Dark Materials
I just finished a marathon reading of all three books; Northern Lights, Subtle Knife, and Amber Spyglass. I know this book and author have been flying under the radar for some time, but I wonder how I missed a children's book by an atheist author about dark matter, witches, alternate universes, and daemon soul mates.
I saw the trailer for the movie earlier this year at some other movie. I think it might have been Spiderman 3. I know I saw it when we went to see Sunshine. I thought, "Cool!"
A few weeks back, a friend of mine asked if I had read the book. He was looking for an argument, but I hadn't read them yet, nor had I heard of the anti-Philip Pullman/Golden Compass propaganda flying about the net. Then someone else asked about it. She was worried about her kids watching the movie cause she had heard that it was promoting the killing of God. I pointed out that they'd be exposed to it eventually and it would be better for her to have control over that exposure, but I had not read the books, so I couldn't counter the reasoning.
I thought that was the end of that, and I'd see the movie, and eventually read the books. Nope. The topic of conversation kept popping up all over the place, and I could not join in with my lack of knowledge on the subject.
I looked online to see if I could get some insight into the whole "killing God" and anti-Christianity/Catholic thing and kept finding mixed and muddled remarks. Bah. Then I found the article on Snopes! Lo, and behold, Snopes makes Philip Pullman out to be a militant atheist, and the books are about killing God. They toss in the quotes from him to prove it.
Well, now I'm not so sure I want to read the books, but I'll still see the movie, since it looks like fun. I'm not a fan of militant anything, and I certainly don't care to be preached to from my own side. Wait. People are disagreeing with the Snopes article? I feel let down. Its not nearly as bad as the time Google failed me.
You know what? This is stupid. I can read two pages a minute. They're books for kids. I'll spend less time actually reading the books than I would trying to find the same information online. Duh!
They're pretty good books! Is all the negative hype true? Absolutely.
Not....
I must have read a different version than everyone else did. Seriously. I bet Mr. Pullman is laughing at the fact that what his books do point out is being proven by the same people who decry his "antics."
