Annual Oscar Meme!
In general I'm okay with the Oscar nominations this year. Having not actually seen any of the movies that were "snubbed" yet, I can't really comment on that aspect. I found 2014 to be a pretty mediocre year for film for me. It was an unusually easy task for me to put together my top 6 list (to be posted shortly!), and it was well into the year before I saw any films that truly impressed me.
I will say that I've been very annoyed listening to all of the complaints regarding the "whitewashed" Academy and the exclusion of "Selma" from most categories though. I will preface this by admitting that I haven't seen the film (and honestly have no desire to judging by the reviews and trailer), but I find it absolutely mind-boggling how quickly people forget that this so-called prejudiced Academy is made up of virtually the exact same people who lavished nominations on the very deserving "12 Years A Slave" and voted it Best Picture just last year! Although it is definitely appalling that this is the first year since 1999 that there hasn't been a single actor or actress of colour nominated for an award, this is a clear indication to me that there's a lack of great roles available in Hollywood for visible minorities, which is an entirely different problem which needs some serious addressing. When it comes to this year though, would it not have been more pandering to shower nominations on "Selma" which is, by most accounts I've heard, just not a very good film?
Anyway, on with the annual meme! I'm doing reasonably well so far, and off to see "Whiplash" later today!
