Another year, another set of Oscar nominations! I had quite a few thoughts about them that I emailed to various friends this morning and as a result feel tapped out haha. I will start with this though: I am appalled that John Hawkes was snubbed for "The Sessions". I shouldn't be shocked given the omission of Michael Fassbender last year and a million other deserving folks from years past, but somehow I still am. I know everyone is obsessed with how great Daniel Day-Lewis was (and I'm not arguing against that!) but Hawkes deserved to win that category, nevermind be nominated. Ugh.
Also I'm saddened on behalf of Ben Affleck. "Argo" was one of my favourites of the nominated films, and he absolutely deserves a director nod for it. That being said, I think it's kind of delightful that the directors of "Amour" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild" snuck in there (bizarrely perhaps, as I have seen neither haha).
I've never heard of "War Witch" and feel like I should check it out, given national pride and all, but then I read the synopsis: In a war-torn central African nation, a twelve-year-old girl is abducted from her village and forced to fight as a child soldier. Over the course of two years, Komona endures a brutal and horrific existence that will damage her irrevocably.
O Canada, yet another lighthearted and uplifting foreign language film!
I'm pleased that I've actually seen one of the short films nominated this year! Yay "Paperman"! It was quite delightful. And should clearly win based on the fact that I've seen it :P
Anyway, on with the meme!
