And so, the continuing tale of post moving day

When I last left, my mother's friends was coming to help with the blinds and the desk and such in the 'office'. Of course I started on my own, once I got the hammer, as she and my parents went out for errands. I set up the fixtures (or whatever those things are called that are fixed to the wall to hold up the blinds). And of course, I miscalculated, so I had to make more holes, screw in more screws... But at least on my second try, I got it right. Now came the difficult task of fixing up the blinds in place. The thing was freakin' heavy, and getting the little bits on to the screws by one's lonesome? Sooo hard. Thankfully, my parents and my mom's friend returned just then, and she came to help me. After that we moved the desk in place and I was able to put a little order in the office. There are still boxes, but they're not stacked either on or under the desk, so they're not so much in the way. I shoved a bunch of stuff in the closet in there, so I'll have to take care of it later, but that's not as bad. And we got a place for our two big boxes of christmas tree decorations, aka in my mother's massive closet. Anyhoo, rest of the day was little things here and there...

Yesterday morning, I woke up very much annoyed with the mountain of boxes in my room, so I decided to do something about it. First order of business was clearing a path in order to move my old blue cabinet from my room into the office (where I'd made space). I did this by myself, easier that way. In the process of liberating it, I'd also cleared the path to open my closet doors. So I started a little box triage. Anything that said 'magazines' I shipped into the office (they would go in the blue cabinet), stuff that would probably stay in boxes, or that wasn't as pressing, I stacked in my closet (there's space on the sides in this one, and then the shelf...) I was able to put my bookshelf in its proper place, replaced the shelves, and got some of my books on there. Still got boxes, but the number has greatly diminished as far as the ones that are in the open.

Interesting little thing that happened, our landlady came up with one of her sons in law to fix up the light fixtures situation (there was none in the kitchen, she had one to put up with a ceiling fan, then there was none in my parents' room, for which she was gonna use the one in the hall, where she had a new luminary thingy to put, much nicer than a dome...). So the guy comes up, and tells my mother how we have family in common. Basically, he's the nephew of my father's cousin's husband! My mother was muttering 'small world' for a while ;)

Anyhoo, that whole deal took a while and at this point, I was in serious need of a shower. There was an issue with it, so we couldn't use it, and we had no plug for the tub so... basically none of us had washed since thursday ('cept my dad, the way he showers, he has to hold the shower head in his hand, so the problem didn't bother him). But then since the landlady was up there, they had her and the son in law look, and basically they removed it and would come to fix it later. Since we were supposed to go out after they left, I HAD to wash, 'cause there was no way I was going out the way I looked... and smelled. So my mother washed my hair in the sink, and then I had to wash with a little washcloth... not ideal, but better than nothing.

So then we headed out to Canadian Tire. We went to this one in particular 'cause the owner is my cousin's boyfriend. We had to get little things (door stoppers, light bulbs, tub plug...) and I found... my cabinet :D I needed one and there it was, on sale. My mother agreed, and as we'd run into my cousin's boyfriend there, he helped us set things up for the delivery. We left the store at 4, we were home at 4:30, my cabinet was delivered around 5:15! Now I was exhausted, of course, but if you know me at all, you know I couldn't just leave it there. So I started assembling the cabinet. When I had all the pieces out of the box, I rolled it up and took it to put on the balconey with the other big boxes we didn't want to keep in the house 'til the recycling passes.

But then coming back in, my foot tripped on the step going back in, and i stopped myself basically on the door frame, with my forearms, like the sides that line up with the pinkies, midway between elbow and wrist... freakin' hurt! (And it continues to hurt today, btw) I took a moment to let the initial shock pain to pass, deciding I needed to power through and get the thing assembled. The main frame of the thing was easy enough. It took work and I was sweating and all, but all in all it wasn't so bad. Managed to get it standing, with the backing nailed in and all. So the next step was the doors. The doors are basically four boards with a sheet of semi clear plastic-y thing (I don't know what it's called) that looks like a sort of window. Basically you get the first three boards together, slide in the 'window' and then get the last board in. Seems easy enough, but then getting the window to slide into the slot of the bottom board was a freakin' pain. I had to get it standing up, with my mother holding the side boards tight so I could kneel down and get the window in. Then I had to get the top board on, and fix it with these 5 inch screws... took forever to get in and remember how my arms are hurting? Not fun...

But anyhoo, I got the first one done, and then I started on the second one... and that's where I discovered that one of my 5 inch screws was defective... At this point, it was like 8, we hadn't had dinner, and we were both too pooped to cook up anything, so we went 'ah screw it' and I was sent off to pick up some McD's (which is literally a two minute walk away from my house). After dinner, I was determined to finish, so I became determined to get the screw in no matter what. The problem is that, I believe I've mentioned, a lot of our tools are stuck in a box in my aunt's car. And she is not gonna be coming this way for a while. So my mother and I worked to somehow get things working with what we had. Found one screwdriver that sort of worked, but just barely, and at one point wasn't working at all anymore... but then my mother had a stroke of genius and found something that allowed for me to get the screw in the rest of the way.

So then, the hinges... *sigh*... Getting them screwed into the doors and the frame, that was easy enough, but then putting them in place... It's the kind of thing where you gotta slide it in and then when it's lined up right, you twist a screw to fix it... I got the first one in after just a little struggle... but then it was kind of crooked I left it that way for now, 'cause it was getting late, and I didn't want to be at this forever. So I went in for door number two. Now that one was a whole other battle. Battled with it for a while before it finally slid in and I was able to give the screws a twist. Of course, it was crooked too, but at that point it was like around midnight, so it was gonna stay that way for the night. I put in the shelves and called it a day.

Went to bed at one, woke up at 6:30 but managed to squeeze in another hour of snoozies... Moving around the bed without my pained arms being affected... not as easy... Today, I dunno... I want to try and take it easy for one day, but then that hardly ever works, does it? My mother still hasn't called the movers' company about my iPod and cam, so I'll have to remind her...
