My Final Thoughts on Critical Reading and Writing

I have always felt that writing is a passion and talent you possess that you can’t make, you are born with it. Writing for me has always been a way to express myself. I used to write little stories about my life or free verse poems when I needed to let my emotions out. Three major accomplishments I have improved on this semester in my writing are learning the differences between certain words, that you can always have an outline no matter what you’re doing, and the eight parts of speech.
My first improvement was learning to tell the difference between certain words. Some words like “there” and “their” I thought I knew what the difference was, but I didn’t. “There” is used when you are talking about a place, like I am going over there. “Their” is used when you have a sentence with people, like “their” were so many people at that party. I didn’t even realize that Mrs. Capy was talking about me when she said people were spelling them wrong until she wrote it on a paper, which amazed me that I was doing it wrong after all these years.
On every single paper we have done this year we have made an outline/guideline to help use with our writing. When I was younger we didn’t make outlines we just made a rough draft which was useless to me, because I would just write about the same thing over again, without any changes. Then I came onto this class and we started making outlines on everything and I realized it really helped me in the long run (more than rough drafts did). I thought it was annoying and a waste of time at first, but as the semester went on I realized that you need guidelines to writing even if it is a pain in the butt sometimes.
When I came into this class I didn’t know that there was a certain name for nouns, verbs, and adjectives. I learned about them when I was in sixth grade, but they failed to mention there was a lot more that you would learn down the line so I had to remember them. So coming into this class I learned a lot about prepositions, conjunctions and so on. Although I may not be the best at them at least I am familiar with all eight parts of speech.
I am glad I was in Critical Reading and writing, because it helped me touch more base with eight parts of speech, telling the difference between some words, and helping me make outlines for the first time. I feel that this class has prepared me with the knowledge I will need for the rest of high school and who knows, maybe even college. This class isn’t the most fun, but it does help you organize your writing for more use, down the road. Thank you Mr. Dallaqua and Mrs. Capy for answering all my questions when I asked you, and helping me realize I am not always right.
