I am almost done with the first round of changes on Bloodstained Innocence when the Goddess in all her wisdom and good humor decided to drop a surprise in my lap.
It all started yesterday afternoon when I found two of a litter of feral kittens that were born in our garage this year hidden behind a large burdock plant. One, the blond tabby, looked in bad shape, and her tortoise shell sibling guarded over her, hissing as I came close.
With a quick bit of handwork I got them both inside and safe in a storage bin padded with a towel. Turn out the blonde was mostly starving, since she ate a huge amount of my daughter tuna sandwich that had been left over from the night before. The seem young, a wee bit early to be weaned and left by mom, so it makes me wonder if something happened to the mother cat.
The blonde was weak and submissive all night, which has me a bit concerned, so I am setting up taking all the kittens (once I catch the rest) to the vet on Monday. My hope is to find a place willing to give us a break on exams for all if possible so we can gauge their health.
The tortoise shell kitten was aggressive the night they came, but as of this morning Adrian had he laying on her back and he was scratching her belly. She purred like crazy. Quite the break through.
I borrowed a humane trap from a local vet (no room for kitten exams this morning) and was able to catch one of the other little mates, also tortoise shell coloration. This one had a huge head and an even more enormous appetite. She was pretty pissed (I think they are all girls so far, no sign of I didn’t want to get to personal just as they were starting to trust me so I just got a peak) at me, but in a few hours and some sardines and bits of chicken she seems to have forgiven me.
The last capture came to be because a certain black and white kitty is very vocal and got corner because her yowls led me right to her. She nailed me with her claw, but just like the others once I handled her a few times and fed her some kitten milk in a dish I was okay in her book I guess.
I admit with my allergies, kitten rescues are not the smartest plan, but who am I to question Her will, ya know? So far I’ve washed my hands each time I handled them, and they sleep together in this HUGE guinea pig cage (about 3 ½ feet across and 2 feet high) while we kitten proof the house so no kitty hair in Mama Moon’s bed.. So far, so good. Could use some good juju that my luck holds out allergy attack wize.
Just as the kitties are seeing their doc on Monday, I am hoping for a call from my allergen on my treatment option in case we decide to keep a couple (not 4, please goddess I can’t do 4) of the kittens as members of our odd family. I am hopeful there’s some options for me. I really miss having kitty around, and I’m tired of the long drives because I can’t stay over by friends who have cats. I refuse to let these damn allergies control my life anymore.
I’ll let you all know what I hear on Monday, and get some pics of the cuties in the meantime if I can dig up the energy. Their socialization seems to be coming along amazingly well so whether their forever home ends up to be us or someplace else, I think they will be very happy.
