As a mixed member of the culture that lived here before the American people won freedom from the British I have often been torn about how to feel about the celebration of the forth of July. I know the concept of what was gained makes the term “Independence Day” nearly sacred for many Americans (for some fully sacred). Though knowing what the cost was in gaining the freedom of some, in so many ways, in itself accounts for my personal struggle. In the end I have to think there are at least things all of us can learn and find reason to be thankful for if we look deep enough.
Today has become something else for many of us who because of life’s fast pace find little time to gather together as family or community. This is a day to reclaim that time with those we love, to reconnect and feed out bellies as well as out spirits. To share family histories and traditions. For that reason, even though I am not willing to support this war in Iraq, I still wish to support those fighting far away from their families and home.
So, in the spirit of America’s Independence Day I give you this gift in honor of ALL of those who fight far away, some to never come home again. You are never forgotten.

(a beautiful song about the fact that not all soldier are free in this country even when they risk their lives for the freedom of others)
