Thursday Thirteen #8 “Thirteen Articles on the Craft of Writing and Submissions”

Oct 17, 2007 23:27

Okay, I’ve seen a lot of great articles lately on writing tips so I thought it’d be useful to share those with the writers around here. So this weeks Thursday Thirteen is “Thirteen Articles on the Craft of Writing and Submissions”

1) Ideas: Michael A. Banks write a two part series called “Where Do You Get Your Ideas” (pt 1 and pt 2) that is very useful for new writers and for the more experienced author as well.

2) POV: “The Artistry and Craft of the Bard” is a great series dedicated to POV (1st, 2nd, 3rd, Choosing, Mistakes) often a huge issue for the write just staring out in the industry, and also for those who need to unlearn bad habits. Its long, but so worth it.

3) Passive Voice: In 1995 J. Cherryh wrote a great article called “Writerisms and other Sins: A Writer's Shortcut to Stronger Writing” which is one of the easiest to follow articles on issues with passive voice and other common writing mistakes.

4) 5) Plot: Lori L. Lake wrote a useful series on plot called PLOT (grin). It s three part series (the big picture, navigating dangerous terrain, and making plans and consulting the maps). Worth the time to read, very helpful.

5) Dialogue: Jessica Page Morrell does a great job explaining writing dialogue in “You Talkin' to ME? Do's and Don'ts for Writing Dialogue”.

6) Italics: Now I know, they can be very useful, but sometimes they’re over uses a lot. Marg McAlister has a two part series called Italics 101 (do you need them and using italics to show thoughts)

7) Editing: Alex Keegan wrote a series of articles called “Be Your Own Editor” (pt 1, pt 2, pt 3, pt 4) that I think are very useful. He has written other articles that are worth a look if you have time.

8) Formatting Manuscripts: Moira Allen, editor, wrote a great article on basic info on formatting a manuscript for publication called “A Quick Guide to Manuscript Format”. Now, remember, always check the publishers guidelines since some details may vary.

9) Query letters: The League of Reluctant Adults spent this week blogging about what to do and what not to do when writing a query letter. Monday was
antonstrout who wrote the article "Queries are Queer". This is a series of articles not to miss.

11) Synopsis: Okay, I admit, my bane is writing synopsis when the time is ready to submit my novel. Marg Gilks wrote an article called "How to Write a Synopsis" that shows a less stressful way to approach this task.

12) Blurbs: Okay, I know it was on my blog, but it counts ‘cause I didn’t write it.
erastes article on writing blurbs was the best I ever read. Writing Eye Catching Blurbs is well thought out and easy to follow. Following those steps I think anyone could write a great blurb without tearing their hair out.

13) Article Writing: I’ve thought often about writing articles and recently I’ve found an article by Shirley Kawa-Jump called "Writing an Article That Sells". It’s pretty easy to follow with some great advice on the subject.
