Parker’s job was to be just who she was. Her job was to be weird, and wacky, and keep the team on it’s toes because they never knew what to expect with her. She kept them from getting too comfortable with their surroundings, or with themselves.
And she kept things from getting too serious. By just being Parker, random, confused, pyromaniac, kleptomaniac, exuberant, glorious Parker, she could knock even Nate down a peg or two without even trying.
She kept them guessing, kept them on guard, kept them taking life in stride, kept them honest.
And she kept them laughing.

Hardison’s job was to understand, not technology, but the team itself. He was the one who *got* them, as individuals and as a group of individuals. He was the one who knew their stories, understood where they were coming from, and made the others see it to.
He was a geek, but where Nate and Sophie understood people Hardison understood them.
It was Hardison that mediated shouting matches. It was Hardison who clued Nate in on Sophie’s favorite flower and why Eliot hated guns, Hardison that kept them connected via coms
and kept them from disconnecting over things not said.

Sophie’s job was to care. She could make them so mad and there were times she almost lost their trust and sometimes they wondered how much of her they really saw but in the end it boiled down to one thing. Somehow, for some reason, she cared about them and it felt good to know.
She made sure they played nicely, hovered when someone was sick, gave advice on girls, offered a sympathetic ear, and somehow finally taught Hardison how to tie a tie.
Sophie was the team mom who kept the “kids” on the team from getting old young.

Eliot’s job was to protect. He was the first one in and last one out and from the beginning everyone understood if any of them died, Eliot’d go down first protecting them.
But more than physical threats he protected them from himself, and the brutal world he just barely survived living in. They could never really understood all that he did for them, but that was the way he wanted it.
He never understood that knowing he’d be the one to take the hit made them more cautious.
He kept them safe, kept them innocent, and he kept them careful.

Nate’s job was to be the example. He was their moral compass and guide in the world of grays they walked in. He showed them how to be good, and forgave them when they weren’t.
But more than showing them how he showed them why. He may have brought them together but seeing him break, seeing what the world did to the man they all admired? It was a daily reminder of why they were doing this: so there would be no other Nathan Fords.
Nate kept them together, but it was who Nate had been that kept them fighting.
