YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HARD IT IS GOING TO BE TO NOT WRITE THIS ENTIRE ENTRY IN CAPSLOCK.
IT'S ALIIIIIIIIVE
MY COMPUTER
IS
ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE
Okay. For those of you who didn't know, my computer suffered an Unfortunate Incident with a bottle of water while I was grocery shopping Thursday afternoon. I called up AppleCare immediately and was sent to the Mac store at Cambridgeside, where I spoke with a very nice young man who took my computer apart and dried it out as much as possible and tried to get the backlight working and checked the power component and blahblahblah. I was definitely looking at replacing the backlight and power component, but we'd have to reevaluate the logic board, to see what else might have taken a hit. I was advised to tent the computer overnight and then check it for functionality and bring it back in.
The next day, in the process of checking USB ports, I discovered that my external's cable had gotten wet as well, and rusted.
I didn't discover this until AFTER I shorted out the USB ports.
I went back into the store, spoke briefly with the guy I'd seen previously (he was leaving), and was told that it was good sign that my computer had no trouble staying on. Spoke with a different guy and was told "You shouldn't have touched this for at LEAST a week."
...
The GOOD news is that the second guy felt so badly about the misinformation that the first guy had given me that he made his manager sign off on a full repair. On the logic board, which is an $800 part.
FULL. RE.PAIR.
The BAD news is that the invoice he handed me listed it as a "more than 7 days" repair.
BUT! BUT!!!!!
My computer returned to me TODAY! And I didn't get just a new logic board and backlight and power component. Apparently my disc drive was having data errors, so that was replaced. The heatpipe had a defective thermal module, so that was replaced. There were "cables - defective" somewhere in there that were replaced. Bottom case was replaced for "video distortion", top case was replaced for cosmetic damages. The BEZEL was replaced for cosmetic damages. And I had a two-day old battery in it when it got sent off for repairs.
THIS IS LIKE AN ENTIRELY NEW COMPUTER WITH ALL OF MY DATA FILES AND PREFERENCES PRELOADED. THE ONLY PROOF THAT IT'S THE SAME COMPUTER ARE THE SCRATCHES ON THE LID!!
Unfortunately, I am sans iTunes library. I had put ALL of my music files in the external to free up space on my actual hard drive. As I've mentioned, the external's cable is fried. What I don't know about is the small USB port on the external...there is some rust along the bottom of it, from the cable, and I don't know if it is shorted out completely. The drive seemed to be whirring and receiving power from the cable, but it wouldn't register on any machine. HM!C is a computer science grad student, so I'm going to ask him to take a look at it and see what he thinks - fine with a new cable, dismantle and rescue the data, or whatever. He just got back this morning from visiting someone in San Diego, though, so I haven't had a chance to pounce on him and abuse him as my personal tech support.
I am so gleeful. This almost -ALMOST!- makes up for the fact that Em-chan has left Boston, as at least now I have a means of communicating with her that doesn't rack up text message charges.
DARLINGS. WHAT HAVE I MISSED?! WHAT HAS GONE ON IN YOUR WORLDS?!
omg!,
glee!
