The jungle on Aiur had long ceased to hold any interest for her, but River kept seeking solitude there. It was the presence of humans in the barracks; their minds became a constant background noise that made her tired and tense. Among the Zerg the part inside her that was still human had been thoroughly trapped and now it was twisting and turning. Her human face was a mask hiding the Zerg controlling the human - a multilayered being unknown and unseen. Perhaps that was her own perception of the situation though, River told herself. Hybrid, both human and zerg. The layering was a question of loyalty, and of that she had no doubt.

River curled up against the trunk of a tree, sitting on a branch thick enough to be a bench. She was hidden from view; this was a favourite place. She liked Raynor. They might not share the same loyalities, but she did. No, her human self liked him, and her zerg self could see his use and potential danger. Was that the same as liking? But she avoided him too, perhaps more than the others. He had thoughts that she could get caught up in, and that had happened today.

Not just thoughts, though. News had arrived that the UED had received a Psi Disruptor from Tarsonis, which would make it possible for them to disrupt the zerg hivemind structure. And this had caused some concern among all of them, as the goal of the UED was unknown and unpredictable.Even after words were no longer spoken aloud the matter was on everyone's mind, and especially Raynor's. And River's. They were alike there, again, and so different. Same concern, different reason.

She missed Kerrigan.

Slipping off the branch, River landed on the ground. Human feet, human body. She longed to stretch her bony wings out again. Instead she headed back to the barracks.
