Feeling Down?

Take a look at the KeWl names people call their kids.

Some few of them are unfairly cut down, I think. But most of them are really, truly appalling. Aren't we all glad Aphie's past her WannaGoth phase and no longer thinks replacing innocent vowels with Ys is a good idea?

I'm sure Splodge is.

oh god, don't get me started on the y thing...i know a particularly stupid person who changed his name to a collection of Yz and Zs so as to be more kewl.

my mum works at births, deaths and marriages in town. according to her, mispelled, bizarre names that children should really be able to sue for are only becoming more and more common....scary thought.

If you join the community prego_drama, there is a post from a week or two ago about truly horrendous names, as well...er, I searched for it, it must have been in a thread for another entry. They were awful and very, um..."youneek". Anyway, that community is full of lulz, anyway. That's why I'm still a member, I guess. :p

I am now blaming you for pointing out a community that then led me to ghetto-baby fabulous teen parents!
My eyes! They burn! :(

That's dreadful. :(
I went to school with an Ella. Her sister Fiona was a year younger, but Gretel was three years younger than that, and Helga another two behind her. That was about the worst I've ever come across.

I remembered about your Dad not being born in America, so I always assumed the spelling of your first and middle names were to do with your heritage (in fact, I think you told me that about your middle name at one point). :)
I'm glad to note that the page I linked has recently (in the past year or so) removed any "ethnic" names (as in, perfectly acceptable names from non-English speaking countries, in instances used by people from those cultures).

The girls' name we have picked for Splodge is actually French, though it has a very simple, Anglicised shortening. My family *is* French - about five generations back - and we have no French history/traditions to speak of. I just loved the name ever since I heard it, it's not too much of a mouthful for English speakers, and like the fact there's an English-y nickname to go with it. :)

misspelled names are a huge pet peeve of mine. (ha! i know it's hard, but please try to contain your shock!) it just sets up a person for a life full of problems. "hay, i think it will be fun for my child to have to spell out his/her name all the time!" it's not creative at all. it's stupid. your child named maddyson/madysyn/madasyn is not going to be any more special or unique than a child named madison. i am so glad my parents didn't give me a misspelled name.

on the subject of unfortunate names...i shit you not, my parents once had a neighbor who was named "sharon peters"...she married & became "sharon tate"...i am not sure which one was worse.
