So Campus Ministry hosted karaoke in The Cave last night and I decided to use it as a program for my wing. A bunch of us went and had fun. You know, I should have known that having a wing full of outgoing, hilarious, friendly girls would get me into trouble. ;-) They decided that they were going to dramatically sing Back at One by Brian McNight AND they made me get up with them. Haha. I somehow got pulled into singing Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under by Shania Twain with a group of girls too. We had fun, :-) They are wonderful.

I was up till really late last night talking to Kyle. We got thinking about synchronizing our future plans so they fit together. He'll get his associate's next spring and would like to go on to get his bachelor's in civil engineering (probably at MSU-Bozeman) and possibly going on to seminary. I have two years to go before I get my bachelor's in art here at PLU and would like to go on and get my master's in counseling (no clue where from). This is how it gets interesting...

We are in agreement that we would like to get married sooner rather than later, but neither of us wants to make the other give up their dream. We looked into it and MSU does not offer the master's program I'm looking for. And it might be difficult for both of us to be fulltime students anyway.

In thoughts of having a family, we fit together really well. I don't want to be a working mom, because I want to be with the kids all the time. Kyle agrees and supports me on that (yes, we personally are rather traditional in our gender roles and we like it that way 'cause we match!) We've talked about waiting about 5 years after we get married before starting a family. Grad school would take at least 2 years and I would only have a couple years to practice counseling. Is that a smart route?

Side note... we are also taking into consideration that one of us needs to have a job that gives us health benefits because of my diabetes. In spite of all the things I've been through, I must say that this is one of the few times that I have sincerely loathed my diabetes. It just seems to complicate things. Most people could gamble and go without health insurance. Most guys are not thinking of securing a job that has health insurance at age 21, but Kyle is (God love him!). He puts so much weight on his shoulders and is so concerned about providing and taking care of me. How did I get so incredibly lucky?! He is amazing.

So anyway, Kyle was racking his brain last night trying to fit it all together. Actually we've been doing this for a while and I've been praying that God would clear my mind so I could see the solution. And we might have found it last night. I told Kyle that maybe I should hold off on doing grad school until our kids are high school age. He was reluctant, again because he doesn’t' want me to let go of my dreams. But this is how I explained it:

My biggest dream ever since I was a little girl has been to be a wife and a mommy. I wouldn't want to be a stay at home mom if that wasn't true. Yes, I do have career goals. But I needed to have those career dreams, because Kyle wasn't always in my life the way he is now. You can't live life waiting for your big dream to come true without having other dreams to preoccupy you in the meantime. And that's the place of all this school and career stuff. Perhaps by having this goal to work for after we've raised a family will be good for me, since I totally know that I'm going to be one of those moms that is totally wrapped up in her family. Think of it as something to soothe empty-nest syndrome. ;-)

Is it odd that I'm thinking that far ahead? Seriously, sometimes I think I'm an older person stuck in a 21 year old body.

So anywho... we could use prayers for this stuff. I never thought of how much planning and thought would be involved in making two lives fit together. Nonetheless, I'm enjoying it.
