When someone starts reading a story, they can start to cling to one if not all or more of its characters. Maybe see them as an ideal significant other, someone they could confide in, or just like following them to see what they'll do next. Perhaps the character's views challenges the person's own, forcing them to strengthen or adjust their own opinions. Whatever the reason, be it the storyline or the people in it, it sticks with you, maybe for the rest of your life.
I didn't obsess over it much, but Fullmetal Alchemist is definately one of those stories that stays with you, and it will be sorely missed. Thank you, Hiroaki Arakawa; it was one hell of a ride.
