it works!!
i'm watching the nana movie right now! all in japanese though, no subbers have picked it up yet.
turns out the weird stripes and blotches were only on VLC. realplayer wouldn't let me play it and neither would quicktime, then someone recommended BSplayer but it turned out only to be for windows, so finally i downloaded MPlayer (thanks to my baby), and it's working!! :D :D :D :D :D :D
i'm actually understanding some of it, and i'm following it well. it's a combination of recognizing words and some phrases, knowing the story (and they stuck to it well, i hear), and figuring it out through their facial expressions. either way i'm SO FUCKING HAPPY RIGHT NOW and i can't wait until it comes out subbed, and then in better quality, and then i'm still gonna buy it on dvd.
