The other teacher and I though it was a better idea then dressing up as acutal people; it would make things more fun (plus, it was eiser to put together cosutmes). It was kind of hard with my 10th grade kids to hold their attention (without the movie). But, the 5th graders loved us talking about George Washington and Ben Franklin in our bad, stoner accents (and they loved "correcting us" - dude, no way).
Funniest thing was most of the kids telling me that "Bill and Ted" was the best Keanu Reeves they ever saw (which I think so, too)...
All the kids were thrilled with their trick-or-treating stashes! They even got pumpkin/mummy/wolfman sacks to carry their haul in and to take home (which held a lot better then the Wal-Mart bags most of them came in with).
They honestly had fun - and for half of them, this was the first time they ever went out. Halloween is like Christmas, it's a holiday kids don't forget.
I think it's a real gift you have to work with inner city/underprivileged kids. I know it must make you feel...helpless, at times, and God knows that's discouraging. And I'm sure you feel it even more so during the holidays (any holiday, not just Thanksgiving/Christmas). It's heartbreaking, to me, that these children are plagued by such hopelessness. Thankfully, there are workers/teachers like yourself whom they can depend on. Even if it's just for a small while, it makes a difference. I know it does.
I think though, that when you don't live in the inner city, or deal with inner city kids, you don't always know what they do and don't need. Even as someone who lives on the poorer end of town, there are a lot of things you don't think about unless someone who deals with it day in and day out brings it to your attention.
*chuckles* I didn't even have trick-or-treaters this year. We bought candy and everything, but the doorbell was silent all night. Now the candy is sitting in a bowl in my room. =/
I look on the bright side of where I am, at least we have people in our community that really want to help make things better for everyone. I'm in a largely African-American district that had, mostly, gotten sick and tired of all the crime and poverty. People do what they can... especially around the holidays. They try to make all of those days something special for the kids
( ... )
I know you understand where I'm comming from with this... you're near Cleveland (who beats us out in crappiest economy and crime).
It seems like it has become that way, that only the wealthy suburbs around us can celebrate holidays while they look at us like, "Well, if you just stop being lazy...". Yeah, there's some bad apples that make everyone look bad, but there are people who do work as hard as they can and still can't make ends meet.
Oh, I'll defentally have fun in Vegas. I'm going to see family that I haven't seen in a long time.

I think it's so great you went to East End. What a generous way to spend your time *^_^* I hope the kids had fun. Good for you.
