More Sendai Earthquake Updates...

Mar 12, 2011 09:04

Well, I got another call from Marasaki last night, who gave me some even more awesome news… her twin sister (and another friend of mine’s), Midori, is fine and doing well. She said that one of the nurses at the hospital Dori started to do her residency in ‘twittered’ Mara and told her that she sister came into work after spending a rather cold night at a train station.

Marasaki, again apologized for her late call… since cell service in Tokyo is either spotty or has been completely overwhelmed due to everyone and their brother trying to get hold of family/friends. So, if anyone out there, who’s reading this, hasn’t gotten phone calls yet… this is the reason why.

Facebook might be a better option, folks.

She told me that she ended up spending the night in a local McDonalds because she had no where else to go. All public transportation in Tokyo is still shut down (as of when I’m typing this) because of the aftershocks - the biggest one being a 6.Something that hit while I was on the phone with Mara. But, a bright point in her night was when the McDonalds gave out free meals to the people who were camping out in the franchise. The manager justified it as since there were brownouts/blackouts in the metro area, the restaurant’s freezers were on the fritz and they just wanted to get rid of all their food before it all spoiled (according to him, they were lucky because about 4 million Tokyoites had no power). After daybreak, Mara when back to her office to spend the day. She says that since her workplace has an extensive earthquake plan, and because of all the aftershocks, it’s a smarter idea to hang out there then try to hike it 6 miles back to her apartment.

But, unfortunately, the two of them are still having problems trying to get a hold of their cousin, Ryunosuke, who currently lives in Iwaki… which, I came to find out, was one of the cities that was hit by tsunami floodwaters (and is, currently, in the evacuation path of the Fukushima nuclear power plant).

Ryu, if you’re reading this (and I know that you do)… Marasaki told me to tell you:
Tweet. Your. Mom. Now!

As we were talking, Marasaki made the comment that apparently we here in the US know a hell of a lot more of what’s going on then what they do in Japan. And, she said “And we’re the crazy prepaid ones! We even have a holiday dedicated to this crap!” Of course, a large part of this is due to the massive power outages that have been rolling through the country.

And, another crazy fact… this earthquake moved the entire island 8 miles east!

We’re just trying to keep each other updated… and anyone else who’s reading this. Obviously, we’ll have more to come…
