Steadily making my way through my massive dorama list. I don't really know anything about Secret Garden except it's got some body-switching shenanigans. And that is enough to intrigue me.
But I'm apparently also staying for the characters.
And because it's such a pretty show. And I'm really in love with the
theme song.
The main lead, Hyun Bin, is so cute:
I have noticed that Boys Over Flowers, Hana Yori Dango, and now Secret Garden have the similar tropes of both the male leads falling in love before the girl does. It does tend to make the male leads then act very stupid. There are some other similarities - like the female leads start out being kickass and awesome but for some reason they put up with the shit the male leads put them through. It can be frustrating because their agency is mostly stripped from them in the name of being with said stupid jackass male lead (though I'd say by the end of the dramas, the relationships end up being more equal than how they started). But the said stupid jackass male lead is still lovable. Somehow. They get redeemed by the end, specifically. But, for most instances, somehow the male leads being with these female leads - particularly in these three dramas, the female lead is poor and the male lead is the rich bastard whose life is somehow enlivened when he meets this strange poor creature that shows him how the other half lives - makes them better people. And I get that - it's reported that being in love makes you a better person. But what about what the relationship brings to the girl? And the Evil Mama trope is alive in SG as well. And all three dramas have the dreaded Second Lead Syndrome - the nice guy who you know will not get the girl in the end because the jackass who was mean to her/belittles her gets her instead.
I'm just gonna leave the pretty here:
