Thought o’ the Day

Did Inspector Javert have any other cases? Could the gendarmerie really have afforded to dedicate an officer to the pursuit of one single escaped convict for over twenty years? Or was he pursuing Valjean on his own time, during his vacation and so forth?

Yeah, I was sort of under the impression it was the latter. I think he did actually get assigned places and did other work, probably quite well (or they wouldn't've let him get away with this crap)--didn't he get sent to Paris because of the impending Barricades, to gather info as a spy?--but everybody around him knew that he had this bug-fuck obsession left over from the skip-tracer portion of his career, and let it slide: Fuckin' Inspector Javert and his hobby-horse again, man. Just nod and smile and hope he'll eventually shut up, so we can get some actual shit DONE today.

There seem to be a lot of these guys. Lt. Gerard, for one, was only a local cop so how did he get to chase after Dr. Kimble for 5 years when this was clearly a US Marshalls' case? Oh well, he was based on Javert so I guess he didn't have any choice.

Then there's Chief-Inspector Ganimard and Lupin. I suppose that you could say he got the Lupin-chasing job because Lupin was amused by him and sent most of his taunting notes directly to Ganimard.

Their names all sound vaguely the same too so maybe they're related!

I remember an episode where some scientists figure out his existence by correlating "strange dog helps people" stories, but don't remember how it ended.

Well, it ended with TLH walking down a road but you know what I mean.
