100 Favourite Characters Meme Day 5 & 6: Marik Istar and Ran Mouri

Dec 22, 2012 14:16

I fell a few days behind in this, so today's two entries will both cover two characters.

Evil never looks so sexy

Name: Marik Istar (English)/Malik Istar (Japanese)
Age: 16
Nationality: Egyptian
Appears in: Yu-Gi-Oh!
Voiced By: Jonathan Todd Ross (English), Tetsuya Iwanaga (Japanese)

I have a thing for villains, and Marik is a very good villain. Granted, having a split personality helps with that (which is why I consider his evil side, Yami Marik, a separate character), but he's still pretty nasty all my himself. He'll lie, cheat, steal and kill his way to world domination and freedom, all in the name of getting revenge. Plus, he's a smart villain. He knows better than the challenge his opponents head on, as seen here (skip to 2:20):

In short, Marik is a great follow-up villain to Pegasus (or Crawford, if you prefer the original name) - he will do anything to get what he wants, and does a lot of it disguised as an innocent bystander. Underneath all that darkness, he also cares for others, and I love how his character development progresses throughout this arc. Plus, I really like his outfit, especially the giant purple cloak he wears for part of the arc.

Favourite pairings: Malik/Odeon, Malik/Yugi

Karate expert + being the daughter of a detective = awesome female character

Name: Ran Mouri (Japanese)/Rachel Moore (English)
Age: 17
Nationality: Japanese
Appears in: Detective Conan (Japanese)/Case Closed (English)
Voiced By: Wakana Yamazaki (Japanese), Colleen Clinkenbeard (English)

At long last, the first female character on the list! And what an awesome one she is~ Sure, she may not be as good as Conan when it comes to solving mysteries, but she's picked up some observation skills from her father, and can certainly hold her own in a fight (major spoilers for Movie 4):

Ran is smart, reliable, always willing to help others in need and loves her parents dearly, despite them being divorced. She's also very mature for her age, handling herself well in tough situations and not letting the constant death and general mayhem she's exposed to get to her. Despite this, she still knows how to let go and have fun every once in a while like a typical teenager. She also dearly loves Shinichi, and I love her determination to wait for him to return. It's a quality that I feel is missing from a lot of Western female characters (at least in some genres), and while she does occasional need to be saved, she's also capable of saving others (see above clip).

Favourite pairings: Shinichi/Ran is pretty much the only one I can see at the moment, with the possibility of Ran/Sonoko occurring while she waits for him.
