Dance, then, wherever you may be...

From my last post:

The other is something kind of amazing for me. I'm singing out loud again. Sometime in my teens I lost all my confidence in singing aloud, even in large groups. Its been something that has weighed on me for years, and been one of my biggest personal fears to overcome, and well as a deep personal grief, given my view on the voice ( Read more... )

Too much to say in a 2:30am comment, but:

I know what you mean about the music.

Solidarity Forever is an old Wobblies anthem, I think.

WRT Lord of the Dance, do you know Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day? Only the first verse/chorus is really important.

When I got tired of the usual tune for Incy Wincy Spider / Itsy Bitsy Spider to Rio, I used to sing it to the slow bit of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance no. 1 (the music used for graduations in the US). It fits exactly.

I saw about it being a Wobblies thing; I think the lesser presence of Wobblies in the US probably has a lot to do with why I hadn't encountered it before, but I love it!

I'm surprised you hadn't heard "Solidarity Forever" before. It's sung at a lot of political rallies. It was sung a lot during Occupy Portland events last year, especially at the big standoff with the police where they closed down the camps.

I haven't been present for any large-scale singing at our local stuff, although I do rather hope it's been happening. I definitely need to learn this one, though!

let the circle be unbroken alephnul July 30 2012, 07:41:42 UTC
I'm a 3rd generation atheist, but I grew up singing "Let the circle be unbroken" and "He never said a mumbling word" (admittedly, I sang "He never said a mumbling word" for years and years before I realized it was about Jesus- yes, the line "Oh they hung him on that cross for me" somehow didn't clue me in until I was a teenager) with my family. My dad sang and played guitar with a bluegrass/folk trio, and Christian spirituals are just some good music. Some time in adulthood, we freaked out a non-religious friend by singing a bunch of those songs. She said she felt like she was at a tent revival meeting.

I've never been good at singing, and I haven't sung in a long time, but this post makes me (a) very happy for you and (b) want to sing.

*smile* That makes me think of my enduring fondness for Johnny Cash, and why I'm very comfortable introducing his music to kids despite the sometimes strongly religious themes. And yes, good music is good music, and there's some wonderful stuff out there inspired by Christianity ( ... )

You have always been one of the most interesting and fascinating people I know from the internet, but then sometimes there is a post like this that makes me gnash my teeth that we do not live closer together so that we could just hang out.

Also, I love the pink pajamas song.
