Seriously, my adoration just grows and grows. Her coverage of abortion-related terrorism tops anything else I've seen on TV by miles, and that alone is reason for me to love her. Her insistence on letting people finish sentences, and civil but vehement debate, is a breath of fresh air. And I can't wait to get home and see her
oh-so-politely take apart Richard Cohen and his gay-fixin' cuddle-therapy (it's waiting on the DVR).
Geek-crushes are so funny. And I've got a massive one; she's even showed up in my dreams once in a while, despite it being abundantly obvious that even in a perfect "she's available, I'm available, we live in the same circles" kind of world, we'd be totally and completely incompatible. Under most circumstances that kills my crushes, but there's something about sexy celebrity brains (mmmm... tasty, tasty brains!) that eludes that internal logic filter. Also on that list: Bill Nye, Eddie Izzard, Stephen Colbert, Margaret Cho, Penn Gillette (even despite his excessive libertarianism and dislike for animals). My brain is so much more sensible about "real-people" crushes. In fact, I think one of the weirder, although nicer, things I've noticed about getting older is that I really don't do "unrequited" anymore. Almost always these days, as soon as I determine someone isn't interested, it kills my own potential interest. Same thing when I notice a major incompatibility (strong preference for monogamy, dislike of animals, etc) -- crush goes *phzzzzt* Damn. Could've used _that_ when I was younger. It was really noticeable with my crush on AwesomeBoss; as soon as I learned we weren't orientation-compatible, it just went away. About six hours of "well, darn/*relief*", and then direct to comfortable work-friendship. Given that that's the most powerful crush I've had in years, what a massive change from the years of teen and twenty-something pining I used to be subject to! Hoorah for that!
And since I've been so remiss about posting recently, how about a meme from
greeniezona?
1. Elaborate on your default icon.
Until yesterday, it was an Iranian protest photo, and I really struggled with switching away from that, because I don't think that protest movement is over by a long shot, and I've still got a lot of hopes for their progress. At the moment it's a Fry and Laurie screencap, because I love "Bits of Fry and Laurie" even above Python for surreal and inexplicable sketch comedy. I haven't really decided if I'm settled on that one for a while or not, though.
2. What's your current relationship status?
Hypothetically involved but totally incapable of coping at the moment? I don't really know what to say about it right now. I'm in a primary relationship with a property on W. 41st St. Lunatickle and FabulousMissT and Serpentseye are so amazingly tolerant of all the weirdnesses in my head, and my utter distractibility/single-mindedness/libido swings. Since this is cross-posting to Facebook, I'll elaborate a bit more, although I know the LJ folks already know all this. Been in open relationships for the past 15+ years. It's really rare for me to form primary partnerships, but the ebb and flow of non-primary involvements in my life has been pretty wonderful and comfortable, and sometimes extremely long-term. For me, chosen family (like the Household, none of whom are romantically involved with me), combined with my rather odd and unpredictable dating life, seems to be the comfortable fit that suits my psychological needs. I've been seeing Lunatickle and MissT for eight or nine years now, although their move to MD means we see a lot less of each other these days. Serpentseye and I have wandered through a variety of dynamics in the several years we've known each other. I think the one-word answer to this question (too late!) is: "Lucky"
3. Ever have a near-death experience?
The car accident with Chad, years ago, is probably the closest I got. At least enough to spend a good deal of time thinking about how incredibly lucky I was to still be walking and still have my best friend. I have a tattoo over the vertebrae I fractured, done on the one-year anniversary of the accident, in celebration.
4. Name an obvious quality you have.
I'm really low-energy, and really opinionated. That's two. I'm also overly verbose, and incapable of saying in a sentence what could adequately be said in a paragraph. So there.
5. What's the name of the song that's stuck in your head right now?
My cell phone ring tone is "Can You Picture That" by the Electric Mayhem (Muppets). It's probably the single most likely song to get stuck in my head.
6. Name a celebrity you would marry:
Wouldn't marry anyone, except for overwhelming practical reasons like health care. Don't really want anything to do with the institution. The one I'd be most curious to explore an involvement with in real life? How about that? Eddie Izzard or Alan Cumming, hands down. Smart and sexy and queer-flavored in wonderfully appealing ways, both of them. If I were to start including less widely-known queer sexuality activists, the list would grow exponentially, but they live so much more within my world that it feels less comfortable to play those sorts of meme games. That's got a lot more of a hero-worship element than just "celebrity crush", and it's a different thing.
7. Who will cut and paste this first?
I haven't the foggiest, and I'm not generally a fan of meme-related peer-pressure.
8. Has anyone ever said you look like a celebrity?
Janis Joplin a few times. I don't really see it, but given how much I adore her, I took it as a huge compliment. And despite how she felt about her looks, I always thought she was gorgeous.
9. Do you wear a watch? What kind?
Nope. What's happening to the watch industry these days? How have cellphones affected the market? I know I haven't worn a watch since I started carrying a cellphone, and it seems to be the pattern I see with other folks, too.
10. Do you have anything pierced?
Tongue, earlobes, both labia, and clit hood. Have had a number of others over the years, but that's what's left these days.
11. Do you have any tattoos?
Boy howdy. Wu-fu over my lower spine, Dawn Treader on my shin, Swallowtail Kite on my ankle, fertility figures over my upper arm, back, side, and hip (so far). The latter will eventually eat my first piece, a yin-yang surrounded by my snake's pattern on my hip. When the tax rebate comes in, time for another session. My current plans will eventually lead to pretty full coverage over my entire back, both hips, both thighs, and possibly further. Other more tentative ideas will cover most other available skin space if the budget becomes available. (for those who're curious, lots of extra info under my bodyart tag:
http://moominmuppet.livejournal.com/tag/bodyart, and some pics from right after my last session here:

12. Do you like pain?
Depends on the type and intensity. I'm not a fan of stomach cramps or stubbing my toe, but I do like some relatively intense sensation play. I do generally stop enjoying it once it hits what my brain registers as "painful", but that's a very subjective and random boundary, and is generally very far past what it takes to leave lasting marks.
13. Do you like to shop?
Bookstores, hardware stores, and online, yes. Most else, no.
14. What was the last thing you paid for with cash?
Two Dr. Peppers out of the machine in the hall.
15. What was the last thing you paid for with your credit card?
Smokes, I think.
16. Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone?
Mom.
17. What is on your desktop background?
At work:

http://www.uphaa.com/uploads/325/underground-lake-china.jpg 18. What is the background on your cell phone?
A nifty image of the Tardis materializing above Earth, but I can't easily track down a copy online to show you.
19. Do you like redheads?
Some of them. I do really love red hair, though.
20. Do you know any twins?
I'm certain I do, but it's escaping my mind who.
21. Do you have any weird relatives?
I _am_ the weird relative. (how long before Jajy1979 points out that in my family, we _all_ are?)
22. What was the last movie you watched?
Haven't been in much of a movie mood recently. Been rewatching the first three seasons of the modern Doctor Who instead. Maybe Up? That was a couple weeks ago, though.
23. What was the last book you read?
Normally I know the answer to this immediately, because it's in my coat pocket. My recent short attention span seems to be affecting my reading life every bit as much as my dating life, though. I don't think I've made it through anything longer than an article in several months (this is supremely weird for me, and my "to read" pile is growing by leaps and bounds as a result).
Well. Whaddya know. Apparently that's all of them.
Hey facebook people -- this entire thing doesn't show up on that wall or whatever's used for primary viewing of other people's statuses and such, does it? Don't want to be spamming folks accidentally. I'm hoping it just drops a link or something.
