3/30/09: President Barack Obama signed legislation Monday setting aside more than 2 million acres in nine states as protected wilderness. ... Also in the legislation signed by Obama is a provision named for "Superman" actor Christopher Reeve that provides for paralysis research and care for persons with disabilities. ... The law - a collection of nearly 170 separate measures - represents one of the largest expansions of wilderness protection in a quarter-century. The measure confers the government's highest level of protection on land in nine states - almost as much wilderness as designated during the past eight years combined.
3/30/09: Jim Webb stepped firmly on a political third rail last week when he introduced a bill to examine sweeping reforms to the criminal justice system. Yet he emerged unscathed, a sign to a political world frightened by crime and drug issues that the bar might not be electrified any more. -- I'm unbelievably thrilled about this. I'm intensely passionate about the need to reform our system, and I've had very little hope in that regard for a long time.

3/24/09: It's been a long time coming, but the EPA made a breakthrough announcement today, calling for a halt to select mountaintop removal permits, in order to address their impact on water quality. Whether this is the beginning of a transition to abolish mountaintop removal is yet to be seen, but it is a huge step forward for our country.
