Of great value to me, and not apparent? That would be a day where I get a lot done, but no one notices me at work.
It means that I'm actually accomplishing my task of keeping IT "just working" in the background. Yet if no one notices me, why are they paying me? The conundrum of IT continues apace...
That and twist-ties. I save them from every cable I unwrap and reuse them everywhere. Incredibly useful and never noticed.
That's the curse of IT, if you're doing it right, they think you're useless. If you do it halfassed and are constantly saving the the day because of your own imcompetence, somehow you are better. I think you rock :)
That's why I got laid off from a bike shop, oddly; I did all kinds of repair and build work, bossman didn't notice, so when sales went south I was laid off. Only later when my former store wasn't performing at the same level did he make the connection.
But *I* value that kind of background work. If you're doing it well, nobody on the outside should see what you've done. If they notice that something runs well and say something, and I was the one who made it work right, that's a nice feeling - I know they're not complimenting ME because they don't know I did what they're complimenting.
