hawaii_5_0_100 . It’s like the mods read my mind--I’ve had this idea in my head for awhile. There may be more to this later; not sure yet.
Summary: Scars tell stories; Kono’s not sure she wants to know this one.
Scars tell stories.
Kono thinks of that every time she catches sight of the knife scar on Chin’s chest or the gunshot scars on Steve’s leg and lower back. Those scars attest to the dangers the two have encountered. They’re scars of strength and survival.
Kono’s got her own scars as well. When she was in high school, she and her friends liked to compare scars. Most of them were small, results of wipe outs, klutziness, or just plain stupidity. It had been like a twisted competition: the longer the scar, the greater the glory.
Then she’d blown out her knee and had three surgeries to fix it, and suddenly her scars weren’t about glory any more. No, those scars tell the story of her broken dreams. They’re scars of failure.
And then there’s Danny’s scars.
Kono has only seen Danny’s scars once; even when Five-0 is taking time off to relax at the beach, he’s usually wearing a shirt. But after one particularly messy case that ended with all of them falling into an open sewer, they’d been forced to strip down to their undergarments and hose off at HQ.
As she’d stood shivering under the stream of water, Kono had stared with wide eyes at the crisscross pattern of long, twisted scars on Danny’s back. There’d been at least a dozen, maybe more. Steve and Chin had noticed the marks as well and wanted nothing more than to take a crack at whoever had caused them, judging by the looks Kono had seen on their faces.
But Danny’s never said a word, and no one on the team has ever asked about them, so the origin of those scars remain a secret.
Scars tell stories, Kono knows, but she’s not sure she wants to know this particular tale.
End.
