They only do that with Crystals.

Our towns were protected by them. They're shards of the Great Crystal left behind when the Meteor destroyed it.

Yeah, the Great Crystal was the storehouse of memories and held the fate of every soul.

-And it had a Parasite in it that spread Miasma around the world.

-The only safe place to live was around the shards of the Great Crystal.

-But over time the Crystals would fade and had to have myrrh to purify them.

It's the Lifestream. You could call it the energy of the planet.

How's it work?

When we're born, a portion of the Lifestream comes to reside in us. When we die, it returns to the planet. Without it, our planet would be barren.

Sounds like the Great Crystal to me. Our memories were supposed to return to it when we die, and when it was broken, its blessings were too. The whole world would have died off without the shards left.
