[Vague apology is going to be vague, but that's how Kain does these things. He'll leave it public partially as an act of penance, partially because he's still readjusting to these devices and their filters. He isn't even sure that all of these people are here- he's been gone from Gaia for only a couple weeks, but to him it feels much, much longer. ( Read more... )

But, father... I've just been told that there are manikins out there!

[Getting up to look for his armor and spear now. This ought to go well. :|]

[And moving to stand in his way.]

There's got to be every kind of monster in the world out there. What makes these ones so special?

They- they're worthless mockeries of humanity- dealing only death and oblivion. That endless army I told you about...

[Come on, dad, get out of the way! :| Not that Kain could push you aside how he is at the moment. Or that he even could anyway, that paternal respect thing kind of gets in the way of trying.]

There's already an endless army out there, and it's already nearly killed you once.

[He'll take advantage of that and not move.]

[Just standing there is going to tire Kain out before long. But he stays there for now.]

But father...

[He looks down, moody. He knows he shouldn't risk dying AGAIN. But nor can he stand the thought of it happening to anyone else. He sighs, unable to hide the weariness.]

...I'm no good at remaining idle.

[Ask every white mage he knows and they'll no doubt tell tales of annoyance.]

There are ways of remaining active without just charging out into battle. If nothing else, there's Zephyr.

Zephyr...

[Mention of Zephyr at least turns his attention to her, distracting him from his unending hatred of manikins. And his father doesn't appear to be moving from that spot so it looks like he's going to have his way... that and Kain is halfway about to fall over.]

I need to see her.

[Surprisingly, Ricard doesn't stand in the way, but throws an arm around Kain to keep him upright. Being confined to bed after an injury can be irritating beyond belief, he knows that well enough. Besides, being with Zephyr would (hopefully) keep Kain from wanting to charge off into the midst of a battle, and she'd need the reassurance, anyway.]

All right. Let's go, then.

[Ohthankgod. Kain is highly relieved that at least his father understands his need to get out in open air and with his dragon especially. Her presence is a comfort he needs right now, and vice versa.]

...Thank you, father... I promise this is all I want.

[Especially since he does need to lean heavily on him for support, and take his time getting up there.]

[Ricard's a dragoon too. He understands the feeling just as well. One of the reasons he jumped at the chance to fly with Kain and Zephyr when he first arrived. Also one of the reasons he doesn't take boats now, if he can help it.]

I know.

[Even if it isn't, it wouldn't be that hard to stop Kain the way he is now.]

[Yeah, and Kain knows that he could be easily stopped too. He's glad his father is at least on his side. He keeps going along slowly, taking his time.]

You and Reis... You both cared for her while I was gone? I owe you both for that...

You don't owe us anything for that. We weren't about to let her waste away if there was any chance you would return.

Still... It means a lot to me. Without Zephyr, I...

[He doesn't want to think about it. That bond goes in both directions after all.]

...I'm glad that you did all you could. She lived because of your efforts.

Yeah, I know. She may not be my dragon, but it doesn't mean I don't care about her.

[The dragoons and wyverns in his own world hadn't experienced that much, as he knew about it- it wasn't often that they didn't die together, especially with what the Empire did to Deist.]

[Kain thought so, considering the Highwinds' dragoon-ness, but he's glad just to hear that. He keeps moving along, pace even quickening a little bit the closer they get to the way leading up to the roof, where Zephyr is resting.]

That means more to me than I could ever express. Zephyr has become... family to me...
