Legal Discalimer: I do not own FFIII or any FFIII characters! They are the rightful property of Square-Enix.
The King of Saronia would have been lying if he said he wasn't looking forward to today's meeting. With hurried steps this morning, he entered the throne room...eagerly awaiting the report from the Monster Hunting group he and Princess Sara from Sasune had created as a joint effort from both of their kingdoms to rid the Surface and Floating Continents of remnant monsters from the Cloud of Darkness and Xande incident five years prior: to help foster a balance between the two continents and the Light and Dark worlds.
When the two individuals in charge of the Monster Hunting expedition arrived in the throne chamber, King Alus immediately recognized Luneth by his silver hair and Onion Knight garb. The Warrior of Light stood taller than Alus remembered and there was a wise maturity to Luneth's smile that hadn't been there five years ago, but his expression was still open and friendly. Alus was glad to see that some things didn’t change with the passage of time.
Beside Luneth, the dark-haired swordsman Alus recognized as Desch shifted lazily, his Ancient purple eyes taking in the royal chamber in a cautious manner that wasn’t portrayed by his carefree stance.
Alus stood from his throne, ignoring royal protocol by walking up to the travelers: placing himself on equal footing to his "common" guests, although he never would have thought that way.
As king, Alus very rarely traveled outside of the castle...by being near those who did, a part of him felt like he could grasp their world view even if that was improbable. Luneth, never one for formalities, clapped Alus on the shoulder in greeting.
"Hey! It's been awhile, hasn't it? How goes the kingdom?" Luneth asked in such a nonchalant tone that Alus could literally hear the annoyed mutterings from people in the court.
Alus smiled, reveling in the friendly demeanor he so rarely got to be a part of anymore. He tried to stand tall and proud in a "kingly manner" at least while replying to Luneth: "It goes well. Saronia is prospering with the trade and travel agreements between the two continents."
Desch and Luneth both nodded, no doubt already seeing evidence of prosperity on both the Floating and Surface Continents during their travels. It seemed Cid's airship business was doing well all around the world...traversing between the two continents had never been easier for their citizens.
Luneth assessed Alus openly. The fifteen year-old King wondered if he appeared differently to the Warrior of Light...or if he still came across as inexperienced as his ten year-old self did when they first met.
"Arc is teaching the kids in Ur about magic," Luneth finally said, reading the youth's thoughts, "He told me to say hello the next time we meet."
Alus smiled, remembering how Arc's kindness changed his whole world five years ago...how it molded him into the person he is today. "And the others?" he asked, knowing he was getting off track.
"Ingus is Sara's head knight. ...So, nothing new there." Luneth replied while Desch tried to hide a smile.
"Refia's one of the best blacksmiths on the Floating Continent. Every time Salina and I visit, she has more customers!" The Ancient laughed as he added: "She's still giving advice no one asked for."
Alus laughed in return, glad to see even more hadn't changed in five years. Desch's hand rested on his sword, a serious tone in his voice: "We're still dealing with the monsters, but the groups Luneth and I have been forming in the towns are helping."
Alus nodded. Luneth and Desch were traveling from town-to-town on both continents fighting remnant monsters and teaching citizens how to defend themselves should they run across any. He was glad it seemed to be helping the situation.
"Yep. We Monster Hunters seem to be doing well." Luneth added, his eyes glancing towards Desch who was already making a move to go. The Ancient was never comfortable in formal situations and, despite being a walking mystery to most, his awkwardness in a castle was very apparent.
"Just thought we'd provide a status update." Desch said as he made towards the exit, "We'll be sure to keep in touch, King Alus."
And with that, the mysterious swordsman was gone. Alus looked at Luneth, who smiled in return.
"Five years ago, I promised this person that we met on our journey that we'd see the world together. I'm trying to keep that promise so I can tell her all about it when I see her again," Luneth said, "This world you helped create is beautiful, Alus. Arc...all of us...we're proud of you."
Alus stared mutely in return, not sure of what to say, as Luneth patted his head in a friendly gesture, "You've grown into a good king, Alus. You deserve to see the world you helped us save."
The king glanced towards the hallway leading out of the throne room...seeing light from the mounted candles spread across the dark pathway, exemplifying the harmony of the world outside: light and dark balancing each other, a coexistence bringing peace to everyone...to both the Surface and Floating Continents.
Luneth was already waving as he made to leave, and for just one second King Alus allowed himself to be a normal fifteen year-old boy. He jumped up and down excitedly: "I'll see it one day, Luneth! I promise! For right now though, I'm trusting you to keep it safe."
Luneth turned back around and winked, "Of course. That's what we're here for!"
Then the throne room doors closed behind him and Alus slipped back into his King of Saronia role, still grateful for the news about the world outside the castle walls.
