SPN REWATCH: 1x16 Shadow

After Bugs, Route 666 and The Benders, I'm so happy I finally get a good episode! Hee. And after seeing RisingCon updates, this is making me miss the boys. I want season 6 here!

Envy me, bitches, this is my episode today:

First the 'perky officer of the law Amy' then the bartender, eying a chick, what is it with Dean in this episode? It cracks me up. A girl walks by and he's all silly about them. Of course, Sam put it better than me:
Sam: "You mind doing a little thinking with your upstairs brain, Dean?"
Claaaasic line! I love it.

Meg: "Oh, and I met, whatshisname, something Michael Murray at a bar."
Sam: "Who?"
THIS SHOW, HOW I LOVE IT. I had completely forgotten about this line.

Okay, I have a question regarding Meg and Sam's stalking: If you're changing clothes, the window's open and the light's on - do you change against the window? I mean, we know Meg did it on purpose to put on a show, but I've seen girls who have no qualms about the open blinds. Am I the only one who either turns off the light or closes the blinds to walk around half naked in a room where anybody can look in?

This episode is a very good example why I love this show: John makes an appearance, and the 'Mystery of John' isn't dragged on forever, and the 'When Will Sam Find Out Meg Is A Demon' isn't dragged on forever either. Old Questions answered (sort of) and new ones created.

Dean: "Why do you think I drag you everywhere? Why do you think I came and got you from Stanford in the first place?"
Sam: "Because dad was in trouble."
Dean: "Yeah, that, but it's more than that, man! You and me and dad. I want us to be together again. Want us to be a family."
Sam: "Dean... we are a family. I'd do anything for you. But things will never be the way they were before."
Dean: "Could be."
Sam: "I don't want them to be. Dean, I don't want to do this forever. When this is over, you're gonna have to let me go my own way."
I am fascinated with this conversation! I am fascinated by where they stood back then, I am fascinated with the role reversal they had in the end, I love this conversation!
I love that Dean confesses, in a convoluted way, that he's lonely and he wants his family back. I love that Sam says thing could never be the way they were before, but that isn't a bad thing, because the way things were before led Sam to leave. I love everything about it.

Excuse me while I flail: JOHNJOHNJOHN! \o/ JDM makes me flail at his appearance as if I was watching this for the first time!

These two, how they make me smile:

John: "Listen Sam, last time we were together we had one hell of a fight"
Sam: "Yes, sir."
John: "It's good to see you again, it's been a long time."
Sam: "Too long."

I can't help but feel empathy towards Dean. He's been through hell, having the two people he loves most in the world be so at odds with each other, and now there's a feeble reconciliation, he must have been so torn between the relief of 'Oh, finally' and the anxiety of 'So, when will their next fight be?'

John: "You gotta trust me, son. you gotta let me go."
I love that, I love that John uses the same line with Sam that Sam used with Dean. Dean wants to cling to Sam and Sam wants to cling to his normal life and the quest for Jessica's killer. They all have their little obsessions, each with reasons behind them, but I sustain that Dean's story is the saddest. While he wants to find the killer of his mother of course, while he wants to help Sam find the killer of Jess of course... everyone is always either leaving or talking of leaving. Dad leaves, comes back for a cameo and then leaves again - does he leave with good reasons? Of course he did, if he stays he'll get killed. But he still left. And Sam - Sam left, once. Sam is back now (at the time of this episode), but not entirely.
Sam would do anything for Dean, we know this. He would kill, die, go through hell for his brother. He'd do anything except stay with him, which is the thing Dean actually wants.

Tomorrow: Hell House! Shadow sees the start of the best episodes of season 1. From now on, it's all amazing, all the time. I can't wait!
