Here's fireheart's lj commentary on the "criminals" statement:

[Ron Paul said:] Of black males in Washington, D.C, between the ages of 18 and 35, 42% are charged with a crime or are serving a sentence, reports the National Center on Institutions and Alternatives. The Center
also reports that 70% of all black men in Washington are arrested before they reach the age of 35, and 85% are arrested at some point in their lives. Given the inefficiencies of what D.C. laughingly calls the "criminal
justice system," I think we can safely assume that 95% of the black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal.

It's that paragraph that everyone talks about. It says that lots of black people go to jail at some point during their lives. I seem to recall learning this from liberals at college, as evidence that the system was racist. Now [Ron Paul] uses that same statistic [and he's racist?] It's the same statistic that Drug War opponents (of which Ron Paul is one) use to argue that the Drug War is racist.

As to the "don't look American" comment -- I'm sorry, I haven't seen it & don't know where it came from.

Ron Paul is certainly wrong on abortion -- as are most of the Republican candidates. It's probably a good thing to fear any retreat from abortion rights -- and a good thing to counter any Republican candidate (who has a chance to win).

Despite the reasonableness of the fear though, it doesn't seem very probable (to me, at least) that very many states in this country are ever going to the way of Nicaragua.
