a letter to "remember what we used to have"

our conversations are always laden with the past tense, our conversations are so intimidated by what could have been that we are frightened to converse. "remember when"s and "i miss.."s are just sufficient enough to sustain a friendship, i find. we hang on with pale claws to the faint smell of autumn and cheesecake and the way the back of your hand felt brushing on the back of mine. we are using the moments we have to remember the ones we had; we bounce memories off each other like stale ideas. we are hair ruffles and loud silences and we are wondering how this was so easy, before.
