Walking in Japan

I was told that people in Japan walk more than people in America. I had no trouble accepting this fact, and I had little difficulty adjusting to walking a lot more than I did even at UT. I think it's done a lot for my health; I've eaten like a pig for the past few days and don't have a single extra kilogram to show for it. However, there was one thing about walking in Japan that no one ever thought to tell me about.

It's really tough walking around Japan while hungry.

Now, I'm not talking about how physically difficult it is to do things when hungry. That's a given. Even that's not such a big problem. I don't think hunger really bothers me too much when I'm being active. The problem arises when one takes into account that Japan not only walks more than America, but Japan also has many more food vendors on the streets than America. They are literally on the streets, too, helping to crowd the pedestrian walkways a little bit more. They are not unwelcome, though, as they bring lovely smells to the area, enticing poor passers-by.

Ay, there's the rub.

On Wednesdays, I have to go to a different school. After the workday is over, I take an alternate route home which goes through a 商店街. My workday ends right at dinnertime. I have to walk a full fifteen minutes past at least sixty different restaurants, all serving their own specialties. The door is always wide open at these places with only a のれん separating the air betwixt exterior and interior. TOTALLY AWESOME smells waft out and attempt to seduce me into the warm, juicy arms of my mistress called Appetite.

I hate walking around Japan hungry.

I love walking around Japan hungry.
