I felt a momentary softness in my head and actually responded to
bunyip's five questions interview meme. Well, I suck at actually asking people questions, so I refuse to propagate that meme. However, I'm reposting those questions and answers here just because I thought some of y'all might be interested. And if any of you feel sufficient curiosity to ask me any more questions - this would be a good place for it.
bunyip's interview of me:
1. What hobby do you have that you consider to be the most unusual?
I don't have any hobbies that are particularly unusual. I read books - hardly unusual. I enjoy cooking, but I hate menu planning, grocery shopping, and cleaning, so I don't do it nearly as much as I used to. I have been known to enjoy target shooting with BB gun, .22 rifle, and .410 shotgun, but I haven't done that in a very long time. I still have one rosebush and a colony of lemon balm that I haven't managed to kill, but my gardening is more a matter of benign neglect than design. I've been involved in S&SF fandom since I first discovered it back in 1983, but that has become almost mainstream in recent years. I've been a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism for almost as long, but that's not exactly unusual anymore, either. I've always been interested in weaving, and from the SCA I learned to do inkleweaving, so I guess that lesser-known subset of weaving would have to be the most unusual thing I do for fun.
2. If you could own any vehicle, what would it be and why?
I've been trying to decide that vehicle-ownership thing for a while. I like vans because they're high enough off the ground for me to see well, and they have lots of passenger/storage space for happy road-tripping. On the other hand, I like driving fast, and have always wanted to try a sportscar to see if they really are significantly more fun. On the third hand, I've been wanting to try out a Smart Car ever since I first saw them, because I think they're cute as hell, and they get good mileage, and they're small enough to park damn near anywhere - including that half-carlength one idiot at work always leaves between his bumper and the "No Parking Here To Corner" sign. And on the fourth hand (ooh! alien fun!), I have always envied people who ride motorcycles. I would love to learn to ride one, but I have always been afraid my balance isn't good enough to make that a viable proposition. Maybe someday I can find someone I trust enough to give me a ride on one. [
jaine_parr, I trust you - but I also outmass you by a significant amount...] And on the fifth hand, I have always wanted to design a car to my specifications. I get tired of never having enough leg room, and there are other features that never all seem to come in the same vehicle...
So I think the shortest answer to this question is, I want a very large garage filled with different vehicles - and a motorhead to take care of them for me! ;>
3. If you could recommend one book to me, what would it be and why?
I recommend this book to anyone who has ever evinced any interest in, or even simply notice of, language and culture:
Hellspark by Janet Kagan. It's a decent take on a murder mystery in an SF setting. I find it utterly fascinating, and I wish this author had not disappeared off the face of the earth.
4. What TV Show is your guilty pleasure?
Um, I don't have one? I haven't watched TV at home since about 1991. Every once in a while I'll catch part of a show when I visit someone, but that doesn't really happen very often.
5. What is the most romantic thing that has been done for you?
A couple of years ago at a convention I saw a necklace that I totally lusted for in the dealer's room. And I was sad and all because it was a bit more than I wanted to spend. I don't wear jewelery enough to justify $60 for a necklace I might wear once every other year or less; my usual limit for that is about $30.
My beloved spouse set me up to be distracted away, and had another friend keep lookout while he purchased it secretly - mere seconds, it turns out, before I made one more pass by to drool over it. I sighed over its absence for the rest of the con, and then some - but, well, the dealer's there to make money, not to give things away just because people don't want to spend as much as an item is worth, right? And then he presented it to me a couple days before our 20th anniversary at a New Year's party in the company of all the friends who had been part of the plot!
